According to Bylaw 3, there are two ways by which a member may be nominated to stand for Council elections - by the Nominating Committee or in writing by any 25 or more members in good standing.
The Nominating Committee is charged with seeking and selecting the candidates for Council that they believe best demonstrate the qualities needed for strong leadership of the Association. The Nominating Committee consists of the immediate Past President (Chair), eight branch representatives, and three members at large appointed by Council.
All candidates nominated by the Nominating Committee are scrutinized to determine that they have demonstrated high ethical standards and integrity in professional and personal dealings. These candidates must also express their understanding of APEGBC's primary mandate, role and duty, which is to serve the public interest.
In addition to experience with business and financial management, the ability to work well within a team environment is also sought by the Nominating Committee to ensure a diversity of opinions are considered in a collaborative, meaningful way. Full details of the type of candidate characteristics assessed by the Committee can be found here.
Under Bylaw 3(b) the Nominating Committee shall only nominate candidates for the office of President if they have served on Council for at least two full years prior to taking office and for the office of Vice-President, if they have served at least one year on Council prior to taking office. The Nominating Committee confirms that the candidates they have nominated are not currently involved in an investigation or disciplinary action by APEGBC.
Further information on the role and responsibilities of the Nominating Committee can be found in the APEGBC Bylaws in section 3. A copy of the bylaws is available here.
Under the Engineers and Geoscientists Act (Act) and Bylaws of the Association, Council comprises the President, Vice President, immediate Past President, 10 elected Councillors, and four Councillors appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
For the 2011/2012 Council election, the office of President has been elected by acclamation. Two candidates are running for the office of Vice President and ten candidates are running for the office of Councillor in the 2011/2012 Council election. The five candidates in this category receiving the largest number of votes will be elected to serve a two-year term as Councillor. In the event of a vacancy created by the election of a sitting councillor to the office of Vice President, Bylaw 3(k), states that the candidate receiving the sixth highest number of votes will be elected to serve a one-year term to fill the vacancy for the office of Councillor.
