Engineering designs are traditionally developed on paper in two dimensions to represent solutions for a three dimensional world. The efficiency and productivity gains of computer-aided design tools are well recognized and such programs are widely used by consulting and contracting engineers (e.g., AutoCAD, spreadsheets, etc). Examples highlighting projects from several disciplines will show how engineers can exploit 3D data to optimize a design for clients, contractors, customers and end-users, management and the receiving environment.
