ARE CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITIES AND CORPORATE PROFITS MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE?
Norm Shearing MAIBC
9:00 am - 10:15 am
Unlike other large residential developments in Vancouver, the development of East Fraserlands sits adjacent to established residential neighbourhoods who are passionate about the stewardship of their part of the City.  Development projects throughout the world face similar dynamics of competing interests. Using the East Fraserlands development as a backdrop, Norm Shearing, VP of Development for ParkLane Homes, will discuss the integration of corporate social responsibilities and corporate financial responsibilities.

MAKING A SUSTAINABILITY CONSULTING PRACTICE A REALITY
Gillian Moran
10:45 am - 11:15 am
As a one-stop-shop for a variety of environmental sciences and engineering services, Jacques Whitford is a natural provider of technical, practical sustainability solutions. This presentation will discuss the process, opportunities and challenges of changing an environmental consulting firm into a model for sustainability, and sharing knowledge and experience with others interested in making the transition.

STRATEGIC VIEW OF SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE
Bud Fraser PEng, Mark Holland
11:15 am - 12:00 pm
Infrastructure systems in our communities last up to 100 years, establishing the basic performance on many sustainability objectives far into the future. How does a municipality consider its infrastructure options in the face of the 21st century?  This workshop will focus on exploring the issues the 21st century will bring to municipal infrastructure and offer a “strategic perspective” on navigating those issues and the growing range of “conventional and green infrastructure” systems available to communities.

TRIPLE BOTTOM LINE TOOLS FOR DECISION MAKING
Robert Penrose
1:45 pm - 2:30 pm
It is a genuine challenge to move from decision-making focused largely on internal values and financial criteria toward an approach that involves many more external values and integrates Triple Bottom Line (TBL) decision criteria (financial, environmental, social). At BC Hydro, the TBL Project developed a framework and tools to support consistent TBL decision-making across the organization. This workshop will illustrate a structured decision-making approach that is conducive to project execution. The approach incorporates stakeholder concerns, integrates TBL decision criteria, documents how and why you arrive at a decision, and helps you to create win-win solutions.

UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA WASTEWATER INITIATIVE
Gerald Robson PEng, Sarah Webb
2:30 pm - 3:00 pm
With over 22,000 people, and 165 ha. of land, the University of Victoria campus is similar to a small city. As such, creative solutions are required to reduce the university's impact on the local environment and to meet the needs of a growing campus population. This presentation will provide an overview of UVic's sustainability policies and programs including an innovative wastewater recycling program, which saves over two million litres of potable water annually.

ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES TO BC'S ENERGY CHALLENGE
Steve Rogak PEng, Rob Millar PEng PGeo
3:30 pm - 4:45 pm
British Columbia is endowed with abundant renewable and nonrenewable energy resources, but also has an energy-intensive resource-based economy and growing population.  An unusually large fraction of BC’s greenhouse gases are produced by the transportation sector, which is heavily dependent on liquid petroleum fuels derived from crude oil.  It is becoming evident that global conventional oil supply is constrained and likely to decline in the near future.  This is compounded in North America by depletion of natural gas reserves.  In this seminar we will outline the major energy issues facing this province and suggest ways that engineers can apply their specific knowledge to the task of developing a sensible energy policy.
