SUSTAINABILITY IN REMEDIATION: ANALYSIS IN PETROLEUM HYDROCARBON REMEDIATION
Lesley Reid PEng
10:45 am – 12:00 pm
Many remediation techniques are used in the contaminated sites industry, though no parameters exist which dictate procedures in line with sustainability goals. This interactive workshop will evaluate the direct and indirect environmental impacts of remediation techniques. Remediation methods to be analyzed include in situ remediation, ex situ remediation, and risk assessment. External environmental impacts will include additional carbon emissions which may be associated with the method of remediation applied.

IS GREEN ALWAYS CLEAN? TRADEOFFS BETWEEN CLIMATE CHANGE AND AIR QUALITY
Kathy Preston PEng
1:45 – 3:00 pm
Premier Gordon Campbell has set an aggressive target of reducing BC’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 33% below current levels by 2020. The revised BC Energy Plan included several policy actions related to this target including all new electricity generation projects having zero net greenhouse gas emissions and zero net greenhouse gas emissions from existing thermal generation power plants by 2016. This has driven a push for renewable energy sources. This presentation will ask if, in the rush to lower our greenhouse gas emissions, are we ignoring air quality? Also included will be a survey of other topical air quality issues in BC such as changes to well test flaring practices in northeast BC, air quality issues associated with mining, Metro Vancouver’s plan to replace Cache Creek, and the impact of increasing transportation infrastructure on air quality.
