INCREASING EMPLOYEE PRODUCTIVITY
Moreen Singh
9:00 – 10:15 am
Increasing productivity brings with it the challenges we face in fully capitalizing on all resources.  Productivity is a crucial concern for business organizations; it is a crucial driver for achieving strong results and creating competitive advantages over competitors.  Too often we hear about new or junior employees not being busy while senior employees are overworked.  This seminar explores how we can use human capital (the competence held by people) and social capital (the contribution from those they interact with) to assist junior or newly hired engineers to become more productive.

THE GOOD , THE BAD, AND THE VERY DIFFICULT: SECRETS FOR WORKING SUCCESSFULLY WITH DIFFICULT CLIENTS AND COLLEAGUES
Denise Wallace

1:45 – 3:00 pm
Wouldn’t it be great if all of our clients and colleagues were pleasant, helpful, and wonderful to deal with?  That would be great!  Dream on…the reality is, sometimes we have to deal with clients or colleagues who are unreasonable, difficult or who may simply drive us up a wall.  How can we satisfy our business goals, maintain mutual respect and not lose our ‘cool’?  This session will provide you with techniques to better cope with some of the unpleasant work encounters you may experience and the choices you need to make.  We’ll walk through a six-step process and focus on two of the steps you can use to minimize the negative impact of dealing with difficult people.

HIRING THE RIGHT PEOPLE: THE FORMULA TO AVOID COSTLY HIRING MISTAKES
Cissy Pau
3:30 – 4:45 pm
As a Professional Engineer or Geoscientist, you're often busy balancing multiple projects, juggling client demands, and taking advantage of business growth opportunities.  To do so effectively, you need to have the right people in place, doing the right things.  However, hiring staff isn't your area of expertise, and previous attempts turned into major headaches.   In this workshop, learn the science behind the art of hiring.  Participants will be given practical tools on how to find qualified, effective candidates for vacant positions, screen out the time-wasters, confidently interview candidates, avoid expensive and time-consuming legal problems by using an effective offer letter, and ensure new staff hit the ground running.
