RULES FOR RISING STARS: ESSENTIAL SKILLS FOR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS SEEKING A STELLAR CAREER
Harriett Lemer, Stan Cowdell PEng

9:00 – 10:15 am
To be successful, an engineering or geoscience graduate needs to be proficient and demonstrate excellence in their technical skills. Success as a working professional draws both on this technical excellence and qualities even more influential - superior “soft” skills.  Combining the wisdom of the President of a very successful engineering firm and a consultant working with a wide array of engineering leaders, this session will outline and explain the essential non-technical skills and personal attributes that separate the career trajectories of “Rising Stars” and “Falling Stars” in engineering and geoscience.  The presenters will bring this core message to Engineers and Geoscientists beginning their careers.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT: A TEAM APPROACH
Gary Robinson PEng

3:30 – 4:45 pm
The increasing rate of change in our world has dramatically increased the pressure to deliver projects faster. The response of many has been to increase attention to technical project controls and measurement, often at the expense of team interaction. Successful projects are the result of good time and cost management and productive team relationships. This session will discuss how both can be achieved through team involvement in project planning, monitoring and decision-making.
