SECONDARY SEWAGE TREATMENT IN VICTORIA

Learn about the mandate to implement treatment in the Capital Regional District (CRD), the regional government for the thirteen municipalities and three electoral areas that are located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. BROWNFIELD REDEVELOPMENT CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

The Ministries of Agriculture and Land together with the Ministry of Environment are sponsoring the development and initiation of a new Brownfield Redevelopment Certification Program, which is jointly offered through BCIT’s School of Construction and Environment and UBC’s Sauder School of Business. This talk will provide an update on the program, its contents and the rationale behind it.

BAMBERTON REVITALIZATION PROJECT, MILL BAY, BC

The site of a cement plant for over seventy years, the Bamberton property was recently remediated following a twenty year period of abandonment. Learn about the unique remediation approach to the site and how the site was transformed from a Brownfield property to a revitalized comprehensive development site dedicating over 65% of the 1500 acres as parks and open space. The proposed development will use the Dockside Green site as a blueprint for sustainable neighbourhood development.

MILLSTREAM MEADOWS REMEDIATION PROJECT, DISTRICT OF HIGHLANDS, BC

The Millstream Meadows site is located in the Highlands District of Greater Victoria. The site was historically operated as a septage disposal facility. Septage and other liquid wastes, including oily liquid waste were discharged into lagoons. In 2008, the CRD and the Province partnered to remediate the Millstream Meadows site, as a pilot project, under the BC Brownfield Renewal Strategy. Remediation work was undertaken in the summer of 2008 and additional work is planned for 2009. This seminar will provide an overview of the project history, work completed to date and work that is underway.

VICTORIA'S DOCKSIDE GREEN REMEDIATION

Dockside Green is a 6.4 hectare former brownfield site being redeveloped as a 1.3 million square foot mixed use sustainable community in Victoria. The Dockside Lands were formerly used for various industrial and commercial purposes, including a ship building operation, railway operations, an asphalt plant, and a cedar shake and shingle mill. The lands are now being developed with LEED® certified buildings, on-site sewage treatment facilities, a bio-mass co-generation facility, and various energy and water conservation features. This presentation focuses on the approach that was used to transform this contaminated brownfield site into a world- recognized sustainable community.

MOUNT WASHINGTON MINE REMEDIATION TO HELP RESTORE FISH HABITAT IN THE TSOLUM RIVER

In 2008, the BC and Washington state governments announced a $4.5-million remediation of the abandoned Mount Washington open pit copper mine in an effort to support the recovery of the Vancouver Island fish stocks. Learn more about this project which will include the installation of a bituminous geomembrane that will cover the entire site and cover the soil for revegetation. Instrumentation will be installed to monitor water quality in and downstream of the project site. A water treatment plan will be considered as a contingency.
