SEISMIC RETROFIT TECHNICAL GUIDELINES

This presentation highlights the on-going development of the technical guidelines for the seismic retrofitting of British Columbia's school buildings. The development of the technical guidelines has been funded by the BC Ministry of Education as an integral part of the Ministry's $1.5 billion seismic mitigation program. This session will focus on aspects of performance-based seismic engineering, distinctive features of seismic engineering for existing buildings, upcoming technical advances and application of the guidelines to low-rise non-school buildings.

THE CANADA LINE RAPID TRANSIT PROJECT: AN EXAMPLE OF A P3

The $2 billion Canada Line Project is a Public Private Partnership (P3) between various levels of Government and InTransitBC, the private sector Concessionaire. The presentation will describe the construction of the project and the many challenges that had to be overcome. Also discussed will be some of the innovations that were employed and the factors that were critical in the overall project management.

DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE GOLDEN EARS BRIDGE

The Golden Ears Bridge across the Fraser River is a six-lane bridge currently under construction in Vancouver. Learn more about this superstructure which crosses two navigation channels, consists of a continuous multi-span hybrid cable-stayed bridge. As well, the bridge uses relatively flat harped cable-stays with low profile concrete pylons and has a structural behaviour which is between that of a true cable-stayed bridge and an extradosed bridge with unique jacking slabs.

SIX STOREY WOOD FRAME BULLETIN: BACKGROUND AND EXPLANATIONS

New provisions to the BC Building Code were enacted in January 2009 to increase the permitted height of wood frame buildings from four storeys to six storeys. SEABC assisted APEGBC by coordinating input from experts within their membership in the development of the structural section of an engineering practice bulletin regarding six storey wood frame residential building projects. This presentation will discuss the various issues related to structural practice in the bulletin.
