2006 Compensation Survey Results

Over 1,900 members from across BC, the rest of Canada, and around the world took time to provide valuable information on their professional compensation and benefits. Early analysis of the data suggests that compensation for APEGBC members has more than kept up with inflation since the last compensation survey undertaken in 2002. An examination of total annual compensation by responsibility point range for all valid respondents living in BC shows that, on average, the median compensation for these APEGBC members has increased by 14.0% from 2002 to 2006

Ministers Falcon, Hansen and Coell to Speak at APEGBC Annual Conference

Minister of Transportation Kevin Falcon will be giving Friday's keynote lunch address at the Association's annual conference in Victoria, BC, October 12-14. Preceding him will be Minister of Economic Development, Colin Hansen, who will be delivering Thursday's breakfast keynote presentation. Murray Coell, Minister of Advanced Education will speak at Saturday's Recognition Luncheon.

Vancouver Bridge Earns National Historic Status

The landmark Lions' Gate Bridge was recently named Canada's 42nd National Historic Civil Engineering Site. The designation was announced by BC Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon at a brief plaque unveiling ceremony at the south end of the bridge.

Federal Government Contributes $11 Million in Support for BC Energy-Efficient Buildings Strategy

With a contribution of $11 million, the federal government is working with the province to advance BC’s energy-efficiency and conservation goals. This funding supports implementation of actions contained in the strategy released by the Province last fall, Energy Efficient Buildings: A Plan for B.C. This strategy, the first of its kind in Canada, aims for energy savings equivalent to the electricity consumption of 340,000 homes and natural gas consumption of 200,000 homes by 2025, with the ultimate goal of sustainable environmental management and job creation through energy conservation.

InfraGuide Releases Best Practice Guide on Selecting a Professional Consultant

InfraGuide recently released a best practice guide for the selection of consultants for municipalities. The guide, titled Selecting a Professional Consultant endorses the principles of qualifications-based selection, in contrast to lowest price bidding as a method for selecting a professional consultant. While many professional bodies recommend qualifications-based methods, the process is still not widely used.

Restriction of Practice Rights – Jaime Torres, P.Eng., Kelowna, BC

A complaint was made to the Association relating to fire suppression/sprinkler engineering services Mr. Torres provided for Phase 1 of a retirement complex in Salmon Arm, BC. Deficiencies in Mr. Torres' design were detected during the construction of Phase 2 and have been corrected. The complaint was investigated by the designated reviewer and the Investigation Committee, which recommended an inquiry be held.

A complaint was made to the Association regarding a structural engineering field review Mr. Tsundu provided for a large single-family dwelling in Lion’s Bay, BC The dwelling was not designed by Mr. Tsundu. The complaint was investigated by the designated reviewer and the Investigation Committee, which recommended an inquiry be held.
