National Engineering Report on Infrastructure and Climate Change Released

The Public Infrastructure Engineering Vulnerability Committee (PIEVC) recently released the National Engineering Vulnerability Assessment of Public Infrastructure. The report is the final part of a three-phase national assessment that aims to identify and prioritize the types of infrastructure most vulnerable to climate change. It is anticipated that results from the assessment will lead to the adjustment of design codes, standards, and practices.

Reminder: Passport Guarantors Must Hold Valid Canadian Passport

On October 1, 2007, Passport Canada implemented a new Guarantor Policy in a continuing effort to improve accessibility to Canadian passport services. This new policy makes it easier for Canadians to find an eligible guarantor, as it allows most Canadian adult passport holders to act as a guarantor. Therefore, if you choose to sign a passport application as a guarantor, you will be signing as a passport holder. You are no longer signing because you are a member of a professional group.

Sustainable Development Act Becomes Federal Law

A new Act requiring the Canadian government to create and implement a government-wide sustainable development strategy recently became law.  The Federal Sustainable Development Act cites the Government of Canada’s acceptance of “the basic principle that sustainable development is based on an ecologically efficient use of natural, social and economic resources,” acknowledging the need to integrate environmental, economic and social factors into government decision-making.

Reminder: Online Voting for 2008/2009 Council Election and Bylaw Vote

On April 30, 2008 the Engineers and Geoscientists Act was amended to allow electronic voting. This year, APEGBC will carry out the 2008/2009 Council election and bylaw vote by electronic ballot. Members will be sent an e-mail in late August with instructions on the electronic voting procedure.
