Three BC Firms Recognized at Canadian Consulting Engineer Awards
Three BC consulting engineering companies are among the winners of the 2006 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards, announced October 26, 2006 at a gala celebration held at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier in Ottawa. Along with the prestigious Schreyer Award, there are ten Awards of Excellence recipients. In addition to the BC firms, two of the winning consulting engineering companies are from Alberta, four from Quebec, and three from Ontario.
Held annually, the awards recognize recently completed projects by consulting engineering firms that demonstrate innovative and imaginative engineering. They are sponsored by the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada (ACEC) and the Canadian Consulting Engineer magazine. The BC firms honoured were CH2M Hill, Stantec Consulting, and Buckland and Taylor.
In the Water Resources & Energy Protection Category, CH2M Hill was recognized for their work on the Arrow Creek Water Treatment Plant in Erickson, BC. The firm researched, developed and built Canada’s first no-chlorine water treatment plant and distribution system for the Regional District of Central Kootenay, one that meets all Canadian drinking water guidelines.
In the same category, Stantec Consulting won for the Kamloops Centre for Water Quality. This treatment plant uses membrane filtration to process water and is the largest of its kind in North America. It is designed to achieve 99% efficiency, and has a partial green roof and was designed with sustainability in mind. The facility contains classrooms, laboratories and office space.
In the Transportation category, McCormick Rankin Corporation and Vancouver-based bridge specialists Buckland and Taylor were recognized for their work on the expansion and retrofit of the Queenston-Lewiston International Bridge between Ontario’s Queen Elizabeth Way and New York State’s I-190. The consultants’ task was to strengthen and widen the bridge to meet current safety standards and to ease congestion.
