Timothy Smith PGeo EngL, APEGBC President, is pleased to announce the appointment of Derek Doyle, P.Eng., MBA, CBM, as Executive Director and Registrar. Mr. Doyle succeeds Anne Garrett, P.Eng., who resigned in October to pursue new opportunities after having served as Executive Director since September 2003.

Renewal Deadline for 2007 Membership
Final Notices for payment of the 2007 member fee were sent out on Friday, January 29, 2006. If you have not renewed your membership, we encourage you to address this matter in a timely manner, as payment must be received by the Association by February 28, 2007. Under the Engineers and Geoscientists Act, the annual fee payment deadline is December 31 and anyone who has not paid the annual fee before March 1 must be struck from the register.

BC Ministry of Economic Development Promotes Oil Sands Business Opportunities
The BC Ministry of Economic Development is working with the Alberta Government to connect BC Companies with oil sands business opportunities. The Ministry is promoting the National Buyer/Seller Forum March 13-15, 2007 in Edmonton, and is encouraging BC businesses to attend the event, which is intended to link industrial suppliers with major players in oil sands development.

Modifications to Fire Tested and Listed Assemblies
Technical documents dealing with modifications to listed assemblies, or the development of new assemblies not specifically listed relating to fire protection applications in buildings, involves the practice of professional engineering as defined in the Engineers and Geoscientists Act of British Columbia. On this basis, these documents must be sealed by a professional engineer registered or licensed in BC who shall take responsibility for the design under seal.

National Engineering & Geoscience Week 2007 - Calendar of Events
APEGBC’s Branches participate in National Engineering & Geoscience Week (NEGW) by hosting a variety of events around the province with the aim of providing career awareness outreach while involving the public in fun, interactive engineering and geoscience-related activities. Activities include popsicle-stick or spaghetti bridge building contests, rock and fossil displays, and other exhibits. Engineers vs. Architects Challenge for Canstruction 2007 – Engineers in the Lead!
“The engineers are definitely ahead in this challenge,” said Margo Paris, Chair of Canstruction® Vancouver 2007. Compliance with the CPD Guideline is recommended but not mandatory; however, members are reminded that those who choose not to report that they have met the requirements of the CPD Guideline are still required to keep up to date and to practice only in those fields where their knowledge is current.

Sweden Ore Deposit Field Trip Open to Industry Members
The Society of Economic Geologists Student Chapter at UBC is organizing a two-week ore deposit field trip to Sweden, April-May, 2007 (tentatively April 29 to May 13) and invites industry members to join them. These trips are specifically designed to showcase a broad range of economic deposits and have been popular with industry participants whose attendance makes the trip affordable for students.
