Renewal Deadline for 2008 Membership

Final Notices for payment of the 2008 member fee were sent out on Friday, January 25, 2008. If you have not renewed your membership, we encourage you to address this matter in a timely manner, as payment must be received by the Association by February 29, 2008. Under the Engineers and Geoscientists Act, the annual fee payment deadline is December 31 and anyone who has not paid the annual fee before March 1 must be struck from the register.

WorkSafe BC to Address Worker Safety in Avalanche-Prone Terrain

WorkSafe BC is looking to introduce amendments to Occupational Health and Safety Regulations to address workers’ safety in avalanche-prone terrain.  At a consultation meeting with stakeholders arranged in Kelowna by WorkSafe BC, APEGBC made a presentation to confirm the role of registered professionals in carrying out snow avalanche risk assessments.

In early December 2007, the BC Building and Safety Policy Branch released proposed “green” Code changes to the BC Building Code for public comment.  APEGBC responded, providing input on the proposed changes.

National Infrastructure Vulnerability Assessment Protocol Developed

Engineers Canada, through its Public Infrastructure Engineering Vulnerability Committee, has developed a protocol for assessing the vulnerability of public infrastructure to the effects of climate change. The assessment protocols will be made available to municipalities for participation in case studies and their findings will contribute to recommendations for a review of design, operation and maintenance codes, standards and practices.

Call for Interviewees and Focus Group Participants in National Labour Market Study

Engineers are being invited to participate in an engineering and engineering technology labour market study being conducted under the auspices of Engineers Canada and the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists. Volunteers are needed to participate in a focus group session and executive interviews.

British Columbia launched its first-ever Mineral Exploration Week from January 27 to February 2, 2008. Speaking at the 25th annual Mineral Exploration Roundup conference in Vancouver on January 28, 2008, Minister of State for Mining Kevin Krueger made the announcement.

Canstruction® 2008: Engineering Teams Lead By Example  

Over the course of a weekend, local graphic artists, students, architects and engineers will come together to fight hunger. On February 22nd to the 23rd, 20 lower mainland teams will compete to build colourful, imaginative structures entirely of non-perishable food items that will later be donated to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society.

Survey Responses Sought From Users of Forest Science Research

The Forest Investment Account-Forest Science Program (FIA-FSP) funds applied research in the areas of sustainable forest management and improving timber growth and value. It is carrying out a survey to gather data on how FIA-FSP research is used and how satisfied users are with its products. As many APEGBC members are potential users of the scientific information generated through FIA-FSP research, the Forest Science Board is encouraging members’ participation in this survey.
