Members Asked to Ratify Fee Increase to $335
This spring, APEGBC will be seeking member ratification of a professional member fee increase to $335. We have now reached the point where any further budget cuts will seriously impact our ability to perform our regulatory duties of registration, enforcement, practice review, investigation and discipline.

Canada-wide Labour Mobility Reached
Canada’s labour and trade ministers confirmed full labour mobility between the provinces in December. Negotiated as a part of Canada’s Agreement on Internal Trade, new labour provisions require that, by April 1, 2009, professional or occupational certification in one province or territory be recognized as equivalent in all provinces and territories where that profession is regulated.

APEGBC is working with the UBC Student Development office to host a Salary Seminar and Industry Reception on February 10, 2009. Vancouver Public Library Engineering Standards Collection Survey
The Vancouver Public Library (VPL) is currently evaluating the usefulness of their technical standards collection as a resource to the professional engineering and geoscience community in BC. The collection, which is available to be borrowed, is the largest of its kind in the province and includes CSA standards and standards catalogues and indexes.

Court Denies Member’s Jurisdictional Challenge to Discipline Inquiry – Surinder S. Puar, PEng, West Vancouver, BC
In the September/October edition of Innovation we reported that Mr. Puar had unsuccessfully challenged the Discipline Panel’s jurisdiction to hear his case. Mr. Puar sought judicial review in the BC Supreme Court of the Panel’s decision on jurisdiction. In a decision dated January 13, 2009, the Court rejected Mr. Puar’s arguments.
