Canada-wide Labour Mobility Reached

Canada’s labour and trade ministers confirmed full labour mobility between the provinces in December.  Negotiated as a part of Canada’s Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT), new labour provisions require that, by April 1, 2009, professional or occupational certification in one province or territory be recognized as equivalent in all provinces and territories where that profession is regulated.

The Committee on Internal Trade (CIT), which is made up of federal, provincial and territorial internal trade ministers, approved the agreement, which is intended to break down economic barriers, allowing Canadians to move freely and work in their chosen occupation throughout the country.

While the agreement facilitates national mobility, professional engineers and geoscientists must still be registered in all provinces in which they practice and where the professions are regulated. In compliance with the AIT and the British Columbia – Alberta Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA), APEGBC accepts all professional engineer and professional geoscientist Canadian transfer candidates, for equivalent membership or licence, subject to proof of a current membership or licence in good standing and good character.  This builds on existing inter-association mobility agreements (IAMA) through Engineers Canada and the Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists.
