Self-Reporting of Unlawful or Unethical Conduct
Principle 9 of the Code of Ethics requires members and licensees to report to the Association any illegal or unethical professional decisions or practices by members or licensees. Self-reporting of convictions and regulatory actions is also consistent with other provisions in the Engineers and Geoscientists Act and the bylaws.

Resumption of Practice Fee Now In Effect
Members are reminded that as of January 1, 2009, in addition to meeting the requirements of the Return to Practice Policy, members or former members of APEGBC wishing to reinstate their practicing status will be required to pay a Resumption of Practice Fee.

Regulations for Forest Road TSAs Amended to Include Geoscientists
As a result of extensive consultations with WorkSafe BC, amendments have been made to Section 20.78 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations to recognize that professional geoscientists carry out Terrain Stability Assessments (TSAs) for forest roads.  These amendments are effective January 2009.

Newspaper Supplement for National Engineering and Geoscience Week Cancelled
As reported in the November/December 2008 issue of Innovation, APEGBC has been forced to make significant cuts to the 2008/2009 budget as a result of the failure to pass the fee bylaw last fall.  As such, the National Engineering and Geoscience Week supplement, which promotes the value of BC’s engineers and geoscientists to clients and to the community, has been cancelled for 2009.

Discipline Notice – Dennis Shiu, P.Eng., Burnaby, BC
Dennis Shiu, P.Eng.’s Order for Further Penalties was previously reported in the November/December 2008 issue of Innovation. Upon consideration of further submissions from Mr. Shiu, the Reviewing Member has amended the Order to allow peer reviews of a “sampling” of some of Mr. Shiu’s projects.

Math Challengers Launches New Site, Seeks Volunteers
Math Challengers is an enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes mathematics achievement among students in Grades 8 and 9 by encouraging school math teams to compete with each other at local, regional and provincial tournaments. Program organizers are seeking volunteers for marking, invigilation and data entry.

APEGBC Member Regan Chernish, P.Geo. is taking positive steps for an inspired cause. On February 15th, Chernish is running the Yukon Arctic Ultra Marathon to raise funds for the Alberta Children’s Hospital, a facility that serves much of the prairies as well as a number of communities in south-eastern BC.
