BC Nominees Receive National Engineering Awards

Two APEGBC members are among the recipients of this year’s Canadian Engineers’ Awards presented by the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers (CCPE)—a national recognition of achievement in the field of professional engineering. Dr. Elizabeth Croft, P.Eng. is the winner of the 2006 Award for the Support of Women in Engineering Profession; Dr. Kevin Smith, P.Eng. is the winner of the 2006 Medal for Distinction in Engineering Education. Both are former APEGBC Award winners: In 2005, Dr. Croft received the APEGBC Professional Service Award and Dr. Smith received the APEGBC Teaching Award for Excellence in Engineering & Geoscience Education.

Dr. Elizabeth Croft, P.Eng.

An Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Dr. Elizabeth Croft is an active member of APEGBC Division for the Advancement of Women in Enginering and Geoscience. Through seminars, schools and symposia, she has promoted professional engineering and geoscience as a career. At UBC, she was instrumental in launching the Mechatronics Program and redeveloping the Electro-Mechanical Design Program, which won two awards. She is also the founder the UBC Engineering Tri-Mentoring Program.

Fellow UBC professor, Dr. Kevin Smith, P.Eng, is the department head for Chemical and Biological Engineering. Since becoming a UBC faculty member in 1991, Dr. Smith has consistently ranked as on of the top teachers in the chemical engineering program. He is a past recipient of the UBC Killam Teaching prize (2000), and is a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada. In 2004, he received the Association of Petroleum Engineers and Geoscientists of BC Teaching Award for Excellence in Engineering and Geoscience Education.
