Due to a marked increase in membership application numbers, APEGBC is in urgent need of professional members who would be willing to assist with registration interviews. Interviewers are of vital importance to the registration process, and are instrumental in maintaining and upholding the standards of qualification for the engineering and geoscience professions in BC.

Retired Members Acting as Guarantors For Canadian Passports - A Reminder

APEGBC members are reminded that they can act as a guarantor for Canadian Passports providing that they are a licensed Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist who is a Canadian citizen residing in Canada, and have personally known the passport applicant for at least two years. It should be noted that this also applies to members of the Association who are retired.

BC Nominees Receive National Engineering Awards

Two APEGBC members and former President's Awards winners are among the recipients of this year’s Canadian Engineers’ Awards presented by the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers: Dr. Elizabeth Croft, P.Eng., winner of the 2006 Award for the Support of Women in Engineering Profession; and Dr. Kevin Smith, P.Eng., winner of the 2006 Medal for Distinction in Engineering Education.

The Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists recently announced the winner of its inaugural Canadian Professional Geoscientist Award. This award is the first of its kind, specifically recognizing the achievements of an individual in their capacity as a registered Professional Geoscientist at a national level.

Engineering Institute of Canada Honours Five BC Engineers

Five APEGBC members were among those honoured at the Engineering Institute of Canada’s annual awards banquet in Ottawa. Seven medals were presented in recognition of outstanding achievement or service to the engineering profession, and 20 engineers were inducted as Fellows of the Engineering Institute of Canada.

Space Centre Engages Students' Imagination with Robotic Design Challenge

HR MacMillan Space Centre— supported by the Canadian Space Agency; Imperial Oil; MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates; and APEGBC—launched the Canadarm 2020 Challenge, an educational initiative designed to introduce grade 8 to 10 students to space robotics. In this problem-based learning challenge, students were asked to build a prototype of a robotic arm designed for use in space.

UBC Students Create Car Capable of Travelling from Vancouver to Halifax on a Gallon of Gas

Engineering students from the University of British Columbia have built a vehicle capable of travelling the distance from Vancouver to Halifax on a single gallon of gasoline. The team of UBC engineering students recently took top prize for their vehicle at the Society of Automotive Engineers Supermileage Competition, an international competition that challenges students to design, build and drive a single-person vehicle to achieve the best fuel mileage possible, powered only by gasoline.
