Retired Members Acting as Guarantors For Canadian Passports - A Reminder
APEGBC members are reminded that they can act as a guarantor for Canadian Passports providing that they are a licensed Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist who is a Canadian citizen residing in Canada with accessibility to Passport Canada for verification (if required), and have personally known the passport applicant for at least two years. It should be noted that this also applies to retired members as their names still appear on the listing provided to Passport Canada by APEGBC.
A list of members, both retired and practicing, can be found online at www.apeg.bc.ca/members/search.html. While efforts are underway to communicate and clarify the location of APEGBC’s membership database to the BC Passport Offices, retired members are encouraged to direct Passport Canada personnel to the prescribed link for verification, and to use their title of P.Eng. or P.Geo. when acting as a guarantor.
The intent of Passport Canada’s guarantor policy is to have passport information verified by a Canadian readily identifiable in the community, such as a registered professional in a regulated field. The role of the guarantor is to attest to the authenticity of the statements contained in passport application, and to certify that the photos are a true likeness of that person.
More information on the duties of a passport guarantor are available on the Passport Canada website at www.ppt.gc.ca/can/guarantor.aspx?lang=e.
