Update on the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations Relating to Terrain Stability Work in the Forest Sector

APEGBC and ABCFP presented their joint submission to WorkSafeBC regarding proposed draft changes to the Occupational Health and Safety regulations at a meeting held in late February, 2007. In May 2007, WorkSafeBC responded to this feedback by issuing another revised set of proposed regulatory amendments to the OHS Regulations which deal with worker safety related issues relevant to fills, stockpiles, terrain stability, avalanche assessments and forestry operations.

Draft Guidelines for Management of Terrain Stability in the Forest Sector

APEGBC and the Association of BC Forest Professionals’ Joint Practice Board have produced a set of draft Guidelines for Management of Terrain Stability in the Forest Sector. The Guidelines are intended provide to guidance to members in establishing, implementing and updating a Terrain Stability Management Model, the result of which assists in determining the need for a TSA. Members are asked to provide feedback on the draft guidelines by Friday, July 20, 2007.

Update Seminar on Bridging Guidelines for Seismic Retrofit of BC School Buildings

As per the Seismic Mitigation Projects Feasibility Study Guidelines issued by the BC Ministry of Education, engineers selected to conduct feasibility studies and develop detailed design solutions for BC's schools are strongly encouraged to attend this APEGBC workshop. The seminar will include a review of actual school projects where the Bridging Guidelines, Second Edition, are being applied to school seismic upgrades. Six demonstration projects will be reviewed.

APEGBC on Advisory Committee for Unified BC Green Building Code

It its Throne Speech on February 13, 2007, the BC government announced that a new unified BC Green Building Code would be developed as one of the Province’s initiatives to address global climate change. This project aims to identify and remove barriers for green buildings within provincial codes and regulations, and identify and propose new provisions for green buildings regulation.

The Canadian Council of Professional Engineers (CCPE) has adopted the business name “Engineers Canada.” The change is intended to better reflect the dynamic nature of the profession. Established in 1936, Engineers Canada is the national organization made up of the 12 provincial and territorial associations that license and regulate the practice of engineering in Canada.

The APEGBC Foundation offers a number of entry scholarships to BC high school graduates entering engineering or geoscience programs, and engineering transfer programs at BC universities, colleges, and university colleges.  The deadline for applications is June 29, 2007.
