New Registration Bylaw In Effect
In a special bylaw vote in December of last year, the membership voted 97% in favour of a new registration bylaw to replace an existing bylaw that was earlier ruled invalid by the BC Supreme Court. Following the vote, the new registration bylaw was brought to the Lieutenant Governor in Council for review. The disallowance period has now passed and the revised registration bylaw is now in effect. Updated copies of the Bylaws of the Association will be made available on our website shortly.

Council Election Call for Nominations

Digital Signature and Electronic Seal Technology to be Made Available in Spring
APEGBC will be offering Digital Signature and Electronic Seal technology to members, and will be the second Canadian jurisdiction to use this system. The use of this technology will allow APEGBC members to electronically preserve, transmit and sign electronic documents, files or emails to clients, owners, municipalities and others, thus increasing the efficiency of business processes and service to clients. It is anticipated that this technology will be available in late spring.

Members Have Two Years to Qualify for CPD Compliance Note
Starting in January 2010, APEGBC’s public online member directory will include a “Declared CPD Compliant” note, recognizing members who are complying with the Continuing Professional Development Guideline (CPD). Program compliance is assessed over a three-year period and the third year will not be complete until December 31, 2009; therefore, 2010 will be the first year that the compliance note will be posted.

The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC Foundation is offering a number of entrance scholarships to BC high school graduates entering engineering or geoscience programs, and engineering transfer programs at BC universities, colleges, and university colleges.

Forest Engineering and Geoscience Bursary Available
The Division of Engineers and Geoscientists in the Forest Sector (DEGIFS) is pleased to offer a $2,000 bursary in 2008. This bursary is intended to provide financial assistance to a student in an accredited post-secondary or post-graduate program at a degree-granting institution in BC who intends to apply for registration as either a professional engineer or professional geoscientist upon completion of their studies. Studies should relate directly to professional forest engineering and/or forest geoscience/geotechnique.

Disciplinary Notice – Terry D. Mulvey, Lloydminster, AB
An investigation into the conduct of Mr. Terry D. Mulvey was commenced by the Investigation Committee of APEGBC, following the receipt from APEGGA of a copy of its Appeal Board’s decision revoking the membership of Mr. Mulvey. Mr. Mulvey was, at that time, a member of both APEGGA and APEGBC.

Disciplinary Hearing – Dr. Anthony A. Salway, P.Geo., Nelson, BC
At a hearing on January 24, 2008, a Panel of the Discipline Committee of APEGBC considered allegations that Dr. Anthony Salway, P.Geo. demonstrated unprofessional conduct by his neglect or refusal to provide a timely response to communications from his clients, regarding a report he had prepared for them. The Panel found Dr. Salway liable of unprofessional conduct.

Concrete Construction Awards Accepting Entries
The deadline for entries for the third annual Awards for Excellence in Concrete Construction is 4 pm on Friday, March 14. Hosted by the BC Ready-Mix Concrete Association, the awards celebrate vision and innovation in the use of ready-mixed concrete. APEGBC members and their companies are invited to submit their concrete project in one of eight categories.

Joint Scholarships To Aid Technology Development and Commercialization
BC Innovation Council (BCIC) is offering two new joint scholarships aimed at strengthening the connection between technology development and its successful commercialization. As a part of BCIC’s Accelerated Commercialization Enhancement (ACE) initiative, science and engineering graduate students granted BC Industrial Innovation scholarships will work together with recipients of the MBA Access to Commercialization Scholarship.
