Landslide Assessment Guideline Now Available Online
At its March 17, 2006 meeting, Council approved the Guidelines for Legislated Landslide Assessments for Proposed Residential Development in British Columbia. This document provides guidelines of professional practice for a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist who carries out a landslide analysis for a proposed residential development.

P.Geo.’s and Terrain Stability Assessments for Forest Roads and Other Excavations Related to Forest Development
WorkSafeBC has issued an Inspection Report which explicitly enforces Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Regulation 20.78. As a result, Professional Geoscientists who are qualified and routinely do Terrain Stability Assessments for forest roads and other excavations related to forest development may now have their work challenged under the provisions of this regulation unless they are licensed to practice professional engineering in this specific field. An expedited Limited License process will be in effect until the relevant OH & S Regulations are amended to recognize that Professional Geoscientists can carry out TSAs for forest roads.

The BC Safety Authority has issued directives on elevating technology and gas technology, respectively: Directive D-L2 060309 2 on Buried Hydraulic Systems, and Directive D-G5 060310 1 on Terms and Conditions for a Gas Utility Operating Permit.

CCPE Approves Revised National Guideline on the Environment and Sustainabilty
Developed by the Canadian Engineering Qualifications Board, and Environment and Sustainability Committee, the National Guideline on the Environment and Sustainability is intended to provide further understanding of the professional engineer’s role and responsibility with regard to the environment and sustainability, particularly the integration of the principles of environmental protection and long-term sustainability into all disciplines of engineering work.

BC Policy Attractiveness Up in Survey of Mining Companies
The Fraser Institute released its ninth annual Survey of Mining Companies in late March. In this survey, companies were asked to provide their opinions about the investment attractiveness of 64 jurisdictions around the world. 322 companies responded, rating jurisdictions according to policy attractiveness and mineral potential.

Government Representatives Pattison and Emperingham Re-appointed to APEGBC Council
A recent Order of the Lieutenant Governor in Council has re-appointed two of APEGBC’s government appointees to Council for another two-year term. Effective July 21, 2006, Dr. Marilyn Pattison, PhD, and Mr. Roy Emperingham BA. MPA, CHRP, will begin their second terms on APEGBC’s Council.

UBC-O Engineering Students Meet Design Challenge
Engineering One Students at UBC Okanagan presented their end-of-year projects at the inaugural Engineering One Design Awards on April 5, 2006. As a part of their engineering fundamentals course, the first-year engineering students worked in teams of three or four throughout the term to build machines capable of transporting a small ball through a challenge-filled course.
