APEGGA Members and Alberta Technologists Endorse Shared Act
Following a special ballot held separately by each association, members of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA) and the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta (ASET) recently endorsed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two associations. This MOU identifies proposed amendments to the Engineering, Geological and Geophysical Professions Act (EGGP Act) that will create a new “one Act, two associations” regulatory model for engineering and geoscience in Alberta.
The MOU, approved unanimously by the elected councils of both associations earlier in the year, endorses amendments to the EGGP Act that will include: moving ASET from the Societies Act to full legal registration within the EGGP Act; development of a new category of ASET member, a Professional Technologist, who would be granted a license to practice either engineering or geoscience independently within a defined scope of practice; and the development of several joint APEGGA/ASET boards that would regulate the new Professional Technologist category of membership. APEGGA and ASET will now ask the provincial government to amend the EGGP Act and Regulations to accommodate these changes.
