Associations Advocate Reduction of Ultimate Limitation Period
BC’s 30-year ultimate limitation period should be reduced to 10 years, according to a position paper recently released by APEGBC, the Architectural Institute of BC, the Consulting Engineers of British Columbia, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia. The position of these associations is that the 30-year ULP does not provide effective administration of justice for either their members or for society as a whole.

APEGGA Members and Alberta Technologists Endorse Shared Act
Alberta Technologists and Alberta's Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists recently endorsed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between their respective associations. This MOU identifies proposed amendments to the Engineering, Geological and Geophysical Professions Act that will create a new “one Act, two associations” regulatory model for engineering and geoscience in Alberta.

DEGIFS Offers Forest Engineering and Geoscience Bursaries
The Division of Engineers and Geoscientists in the Forest Sector is pleased to offer two bursaries, each for $2,000. The bursaries are intended to provide financial assistance to students in an accredited post-secondary or post-graduate program at a degree-granting institution in BC who intend to apply for registration as either a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist upon completion of their studies. The deadline for applications is June 30, 2007.

Public consultations will be held in three communities in BC - starting with Vancouver on May 14, 2007 - as a part of an independent review of the Railway Safety Act. Consultations will also be held in Kamloops and Prince George.

2006 BC Building Code Seminar: Major Changes to Structural and Geotechnical Design Provisions in BC Building Code
The recently released 2006 edition of the British Columbia Building Code contains significant revisions in the provisions for structural and geotechnical designs. APEGBC will be presenting a one-day seminar on June 21, 2007 in partnership with the BC Building Policy Branch.

Inquiry into Laval Overpass Collapse Underway
An inquiry into the collapse of the Boulevard de la Concorde overpass in Laval, Quebec was launched last month, and public hearings are currently underway. On September 30, 2006, five people died, and six others were injured when a section of the concrete overpass fell, crushing cars on the highway below.

Determination and Order - Christian Mordhorst, P.Eng., Nelson, BC
A complaint was made to the Association including an allegation that a retaining wall, which Mr. Mordhorst had designed and submitted for a residential subdivision, was flawed. The matter was referred to the Investigation Committee, which recommended that an inquiry be held.

Disciplinary Hearing - Ross L. Morton, Innisfail, AB
A complaint was made by the Practice Review Committee of the Association, alleging that Mr. Morton had breached Section 44 of the Engineers and Geoscientists Act, in that he had failed to submit a detailed proposal to address certain referenced areas of his practice, where improvement was required. The complaint was investigated by the designated reviewer and the Investigation Committee, but no replies were received to their letters to Mr. Morton.

CSA Climate Change Survey
The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) is conducting an online survey on climate change and the challenges it poses for Canada’s civil infrastructure. This survey is intended to help facilitate initiatives to ensure that Canada’s professional engineers are properly equipped to deal with significant issues such as climate change, and resilient, adequate civil infrastructure.

GEERing Up! Offers an Engaging Science Experience for Kids
GEERing Up! UBC Engineering Science for Kids is a non-profit program operated by UBC engineering and science students that offers workshops and camps for students in Grades 2 through 10 at the UBC Point Grey campus. During May and June, GEERing Up! offers full-day workshops at schools in the Lower Mainland, and in July and August, summer camps are available.

Recent Study Examines Trends in Science and Engineering Ph.D.'s
Employing 2001 Census data, the Statistics Canada study “Where are the Scientists and Engineers?” examines the labour market characteristics of Canada's scientists and engineers based on their major field of studies and highest degree obtained. The survey also examines trends in geography and age characteristics, employment levels, and occupation.
