Return to Practice Policy Comes Into Effect January 1, 2009

An amended Non-Practising bylaw and a related Return to Practice policy will come into effect on January 1, 2009. These changes give consideration to current competency of members returning to practice, bringing the engineering and geoscience professions in BC into line with other professions in BC and elsewhere regarding return to practice. Members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the requirements for Return to Practice so that they can make an informed decision in the event that they need to reacquire practice rights after January 1, 2009.

Deadline to Renew Your APEGBC Membership is January 1, 2009

Under the Engineers and Geoscientists Act, the annual fee payment deadline is January 1, 2009 compared to December 31 in recent years. Members should be aware that a $75 late fee will be levied on delinquent payments according to the Act. On March 1, anyone who has not yet paid their annual fee will be struck from the register.

Industry/Student Mixer Night At UBC on November 19, 2008

Discipline Notice – Avnash Banwait, P.Eng., Surrey, BC

Avnash Banwait, P.Eng. accepted a Determination and Order in 2007 for having sealed a Record of Professional Structural Concept Review where the supporting plans were not properly identified and the plans and documents contained numerous errors. As part of his penalty, Mr. Banwait was ordered to undergo a practice review at his own expense. Mr. Banwait’s practice review was found not in compliance.

Elzbieta Lawrynowicz accepted a Stipulated Order in 2007 for having signed, sealed and delivered structural design drawings for temporary structures to the City of Vancouver that contained a number of deficiencies. As part of her penalty, Ms. Lawrynowicz was ordered to undergo a practice review. Ms. Lawrynowicz’ practice review was found not in compliance.

Discipline Notice – Dennis Shiu, P.Eng., Burnaby, BC

Dennis Shiu, P.Eng. accepted a Stipulated Order in 2006 for issuing Schedules C-B under the Building Code for a building that had significant deficiencies.  As part of his penalty, Mr. Shiu was ordered to undergo a practice review at his own expense. Mr. Shiu’s practice review was found not in compliance.

Discipline Notice – Robert Weicker, Coquitlam, BC

Robert Weicker was served with a Notice of Inquiry alleging unprofessional conduct for signing and publishing three misleading news releases as the Senior Geologist and a director of a mining company. A mediation involving Mr. Weicker and representatives of the Registrar of the Association and the Association’s Discipline Committee was held to discuss resolution of the matter.
