Digital Signature and Electronic Seal Technology Now Available
APEGBC has partnered with Notarius Inc. to offer digital signature and electronic seal technology to members. Use of the technology will allow APEGBC members to electronically preserve, transmit and sign electronic documents, files or e-mails to clients, owners, municipalities and others.

Deadline to Update Annual Billing Contact Information - Friday, October 24, 2008
Members who have recently changed their mailing and/or e-mail address should note that they will need to update their member contact information in order to receive the 2009 Annual Fee Renewal Invoice and Information. The fee renewal package will be e-mailed out in late October, while the Canada Post renewal package will be mailed mid-November. Members are strongly encouraged to provide a current e-mail address in order to minimize postage, printing, and other costs. The "online only" fee renewal process is the most efficient and environmentally friendly way of renewing membership, and over 11,000 members have already elected to receive the 2009 fee renewal package by e-mail only.

2008 Compensation Survey Results Available
This year, over 2,300 members from across BC, the rest of Canada and around the world took time to provide valuable information on their professional compensation and benefits. An examination of total annual compensation by responsibility point range for all valid respondents living in BC shows that, on average, the median compensation for these APEGBC members has increased by 7.4% from 2006 to 2008.

The Professional Renewal Consultation Survey closes Wednesday, October 16, 2008. Members have just one week left to respond to survey questions on specific propositions for development in the areas of public interest, registration, and practice guidelines and standards. The survey is estimated to take five minutes to complete.

APEGBC Prepares for National Professional Mobility
APEGBC has met the requirements to be in compliance with the British Columbia-Alberta Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) and the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT). The Association has incorporated its registration requirements into a draft TILMA Labour Mobility agreement that was approved in principle by APEGBC Council in June 2008.

Building and Safety Policy Branch Issues Bulletin on Structural Design of Part 9 Wood-frame Buildings
The Building and Safety Policy Branch of the BC Office of Housing and Construction Standards has issued an information bulletin regarding seismic structural design of Part 9 wood-frame buildings. Bulletin B08-03 clarifies the application of Section 9.4 structural requirements in the 2006 BC Building code, specifically for seismic structural design of Part 9 wood-frame buildings that fall within the scope of clause 9.4.2.1(1).

New Requirements for Mid-size Wood-frame Residential Construction to be Developed
The Office of Housing and Construction Standards have announced that new Building Code requirements will be developed to increase the maximum building height for mid-rise wood-frame residential construction from four to six storeys. These requirements will come into effect in January 2009.

Poll shows Public Familiar with Engineers, Less Aware of Geoscientists
APEGBC recently conducted a public opinion poll in BC through marketing research firm Angus Reid Strategies. The poll was used to assess public awareness and perception of the professions and the Association, and to determine what perceived barriers may discourage teenagers (13-19) from pursuing careers in engineering and geoscience.

APEGBC’s Divisions provide networking, practice guidance and professional development opportunities in a particular field or area of interest. They allow members with common professional interests to share and disseminate information, and to review and develop policy in that specific area. Discipline Inquiry – Jerzy Kaminski, P.Eng., Vancouver, BC
A complaint was received by the Association regarding a concept review performed by Mr. Kaminski. The matter was investigated by staff and referred to the Investigation Committee. A sub-committee was appointed and recommended an inquiry, which was supported by the Investigation Committee and a Notice of Inquiry was issued.

Jurisdictional Challenge to Discipline Inquiry – Surinder S. Puar, P.Eng., West Vancouver, BC
The Association received information regarding geotechnical engineering services provided by Mr. Puar. The matter was referred to the Association’s Investigation Committee and an investigation was commenced. After reviewing the matter, the Investigation Committee recommended an inquiry be held and referred the matter to the Discipline Committee.

David Carlyle Scott, Former Member, Heinsburg, AB
On April 9, 2007, the roof of the Fort Nelson Recreation Centre collapsed. As David Carlyle Scott was the engineer of record for the replacement of panels of the roof, his involvement was brought to the attention of the Association and an investigation was commenced.
