Sea to Sky Branch Donates $3,000 to APEGBC Foundation

Last April, APEGBC’s Sea to Sky Branch hosted a professional development seminar on “Building an Effective Team,” a highly successful event that attracted over 50 members from across the Lower Mainland.
Due in part to the success of this seminar, “it became clear that we would have a sizeable operating surplus at the fiscal year end,” said Dan Nolan, P.Eng., Branch Treasurer. “The executive unanimously supported the idea of making a $3,000 donation to the APEGBC Foundation to fund its scholarships.”
The APEGBC Foundation promotes education in engineering and geoscience by granting university entrance scholarships, college transfer scholarships, undergraduate engineering and geoscience scholarships, and student membership awards.
Mohammad Afsar, P.Eng., Branch Chair, cites enhancing the public image of the professions as one of the key goals of the Branch over the next year. “Offering scholarships is one way to promote engineering and geoscience education to bright young minds who, in turn, make contributions as professional engineers and geoscientists for the betterment of society,” he said.
Thanks to the generosity of members, organizations and groups like the Sea to Sky Branch, the Foundation has awarded over $350,000 in undergraduate grants and scholarships since its inception in 1994. During 2005/2006 member donations totalled just over $41,000, allowing the Foundation to grant 34 awards to aspiring engineers and geoscientists.
The Foundation sincerely appreciates and encourages the continued support of members, branches and external organizations in their pledge to maintain and improve the ambitious scholarship programs in place. The benefits of these awards are immeasurable to the students who receive them, providing the financial assistance they need to start or continue their education as well as the professional recognition they deserve for their academic achievements.
Donations to the Foundation are tax deductible under Canada Revenue Agency regulations. Donations are welcome and can be forwarded to the APEGBC Foundation c/o 200-4010 Regent Street, Burnaby, BC V5C 6N2.
