APEGBC Member Named Outstanding Canadian Biomedical Engineer

APEGBC member Ken Yip, P.Eng. was named Outstanding Canadian Biomedical Engineer for 2006 by the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society (CMBES).  Yip is Vancouver Coastal Health director of biomedical engineering.

The award, established in 1989, recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of biomedical engineering and health care delivery in Canada. The rigorous nomination process involves the review of the past five years of each candidate’s work and, in some years, the Outstanding Biomedical Engineer award is not granted.

Ken Yip’s expertise in lasers has been acknowledged in the biomedical engineering field since the early days of their use in medicine.  Other areas of expertise include pacemakers and technology management. With the majority of the CMBES membership residing in Central Canada, Yip is especially honoured that efforts in the West are being recognized.  He cited the support of his department as a contributing factor: “As with most awards, this belongs to my whole department. If we didn’t have a group of individuals to help us get where we are, I don’t think we would have achieved so much,” said Yip.

Yip has been a member of APEGBC since 1981.  He has been active in the Association as an interviewer for the foreign-trained candidate competency and verification process. In addition to being a member of the Fraser Valley and Tri City Branches of APEGBC, Yip is also a long-time member of the Advisory Committee on Medical Devices for the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, and a consultant for the BC Coroner's Service.  Yip shares his knowledge and experience by contributing to publications, lecturing at conferences and other events, and teaching for BCIT's Biomedical Engineering Technology program.
