Members are reminded that the early fee deadline for Annual Conference registration is September 12, 2006. After this date, full fees will be in effect. Please be aware that refunds will not be accepted after October 2, 2006. Also, for those planning on booking hotel accommodation at the Fairmont Empress and the Harbour Tower Hotel & Suites, please note that in order to secure the special APEGBC rates, room reservations must be made by September 11, 2006. After this date, room rates will be based on availability.

Sea to Sky Branch Donates $3,000 to APEGBC Foundation

Thanks to the generosity of members, organizations and groups like the Sea to Sky Branch, the Foundation has awarded over $350,000 in undergraduate grants and scholarships since its inception in 1994. The APEGBC Foundation promotes education in engineering and geoscience by granting university entrance scholarships, college transfer scholarships, undergraduate engineering and geoscience scholarships, and student membership awards.

Local Survey To Identify Green Building Market Trends

Vancouver’s Sustainable Building Centre is conducting a survey of BC-based architects, engineers and contractors to determine the level of demand for green building-related services. The results will allow firms to measure themselves against the industry average and identify green building opportunities.

APEGBC Member Named Outstanding Canadian Biomedical Engineer

APEGBC member Ken Yip, P.Eng. was recently named Outstanding Canadian Biomedical Engineer for 2006 by the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society. The award, established in 1989, recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of biomedical engineering and health care delivery in Canada.

Toronto Man Fined $45,000 for Illegally Representing Himself as a Professional Engineer

Sean A. Clyke of Toronto was fined a total of $45,000 for misrepresenting himself as a professional engineer to an employment agency and for using the titles of  “professional engineer” and “P.Eng.” Mr. Clyke is not, nor has he ever been, licensed as a professional engineer in Ontario, and under the province’s Professional Engineers Act only individuals who are licensed by the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) may represent themselves as professional engineers.

Canadian women from across Canada are being invited to apply for four new annual scholarships. The Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation (CEMF) has partnered with AMEC and IBM to provide scholarships for women in engineering beginning this fall.

Disciplinary Hearing - Jamal J. (Jay) Asfar, North Vancouver, BC

Mr. Asfar authored an expert report with respect to reconstruction of a motor vehicle accident. The Judge hearing the case refused to admit into evidence Mr. Asfar’s report on the basis that he was not shown to have the qualifications to provide opinion evidence in this area. The Association was advised of the Judge’s ruling and wrote to Mr. Asfar advising that this potential breach of the Code of Ethics would not be investigated so long as it did not occur again.

Stipulated Order –William K.T. Tong, P.Eng., Vancouver, BC

A Notice of Inquiry was issued by the Association alleging the Mr. Tong demonstrated unprofessional conduct in signing and sealing fabrication drawings for a bridge when no concept review had been performed and when the drawings contained a number of unacceptable design components. The complaint was investigated by the Association's designated reviewer and Investigation Committee, which recommended that an inquiry be held.

DAWEG Celebrates 15 Years

DAWEG will be celebrating its 15-year anniversary at its AGM on September 21 at Science World. This year’s theme is “Paths to Success in Engineering and Geoscience.” Members are invited to attend the panel discussion on this topic and to participate in the election of the new DAWEG Board.
