Professional Development Takes Centre Stage at Annual Conference

The Annual Conference and AGM, taking place from October 25 to 27 in Whistler, offers members more professional development opportunities than ever before.  In keeping with APEGBC’s dedication to providing a wide variety of relevant and accessible professional development sessions, the conference highlights six technical streams and three business streams, as well as three pre-conference sessions.

This year, Engineering and Geoscience in the Forest Sector, as well as Structural Engineering, will host two days of sessions.  Engineering and Geoscience in the Forest Sector will focus on the important issue of regulation under the Forest Range Practices Act, while Structural Engineering will explore current innovations and code updates in both bridge and seismic design.

The sessions in the Municipal Engineering stream will focus attention on asset management planning, infrastructure, and facility stewardship.  Members interested in learning more about the regulatory issues facing the professions of engineering and geoscience will find the Professional Regulation stream of interest.  Sessions on practicing under TILMA and electronic seal technology will be presented, along with Executive Director Derek Doyle speaking on the topic of professional renewal.

Sessions in the Environment stream will highlight green building, clean energy, and climate change, and a seminar on Environmental Law is also taking place as part of the pre-conference events on Wednesday, October 24.  New to the conference this year is the Sustainability stream, with a selection of topics including sustainable community infrastructure, Triple Bottom Line decision-making, and alternative energy.

The six technical sessions are complemented by two business streams – Management, and Better Business – and for the first time, a Consulting Practice stream.  Consulting Practice will be dedicated to common issues facing engineering and geoscience consultants, including information on setting fee guidelines, risk management, and contract review.  Team leaders, managers, and supervisors will find the Management and Better Business streams of particular interest, with topics ranging from retaining employee talent to developing your leadership brand.
