APEGBC Members: Count Yourself In

Don’t forget to vote! Council Election and Bylaw Vote Ballot packages were mailed out in the last week of August. Please take the time to review the Council Election and Bylaw Vote booklets and make your vote count by returning it to the Association Offices by noon on Friday, October, 12, 2007.

APEGBC Improves Employment Centre with New Online Service

APEGBC’s Employment Centre received an upgrade with the launch of the new Association website and the introduction of a new online service where members can post their qualifications.  The new module allows APEGBC members who are seeking employment to login and post their qualifications for potential employers to view while remaining anonymous.  Employers are then able to view members available for employment and contact them directly by email regarding potential employment opportunities. 

To post your qualifications, visit www.apeg.bc.ca/services/employmentcentre.html and login using your APEGBC System ID and your password, which is your birth date in yyyymmdd format.

APEGBC Annual Conference - Important Deadline Dates

Members are reminded that the early fee deadline for Annual Conference registration is September 24, 2007. After this date, full fees will be in effect. Please be aware that refunds will not be accepted after October 15, 2007. Also, for those planning on booking hotel accommodation at the Hilton Whistler Resort & Spa, please note that in order to secure the special APEGBC rates, room reservations must be made by September 24, 2007. After this date, room rates will be based on availability.

Engineering and Geoscience Undergraduate Scholarships

The APEGBC Foundation offers a number of scholarships to engineering and geoscience students attending BC universities.  Three different scholarships are available this fall and include the 2007 BC Hydro/APEGBC scholarships, 2007 APEG-MAPS scholarships, and the 2007 South Central Branch Thompson Rivers University Engineering Transfer scholarship.

Discipline & Enforcement

Injunction Application – Randy Hartford, Nanaimo, BC

On March 1, 2007, Mr. Hartford was struck from the register for failure to pay his 2007 annual dues. In July, the Association received a copy of a document signed and sealed by Mr. Hartford on June 1, 2007. The Association has since filed an application in BC Supreme Court for an injunction to stop Mr. Hartford from practising engineering.

Stipulated Order – Jerry Lay, P.Eng., Lake Country, BC

Concerns were brought to the Association’s attention regarding the quality of the design and documentation for a number of sewerage systems designed by Mr. Lay. The matter was referred to the Investigation Committee, which decided that it should commence an investigation. A sub-committee was appointed and, after collecting and reviewing information and documents from the member and others, found the work was deficient and recommended an inquiry.

Disciplinary Hearing – Dr. Frank Stromotich, West Vancouver, BC

In a decision dated July 3, 2007, a discipline panel held Dr. Stromotich liable of unprofessional conduct in failing to respond to a request by the Investigation Committee for documents and information, contrary to section 30(4) of the Engineers’ & Geoscientists Act; and in making comments in his e-mails questioning the competency of another member.

TV Series Chronicles Geological History of Canada’s Landscape

CBC is featuring a new five-part series that chronicles Canada's geological past. Shot in high definition, Geologic Journey documents the adventure through time of the Canadian landscape, beginning with the Great Lakes, moving to the Rockies, the Canadian Shield, the Appalachians and the Atlantic Coast. The series debuts Sunday, September 9 at 7 pm on CBC Television and Thursday, September 13 at 10pm ET/PT on CBC Newsworld.
