As regulations and standards have evolved to reflect increased emphasis on reducing energy use in buildings, the role of building professionals in achieving compliance and successful integration of emerging technologies has become increasingly important. This half-day seminar will be of interest to building enclosure professionals and others interested in the impact of enclosure design on energy performance of Part 3 buildings. Speakers will introduce current regulations and compliance paths in the BC and Vancouver contexts and provide an overview of current standards, including specific requirements of ASHRAE 90.1, implications of LEED, and the MNEBC. Topics include: calculation of effective U-values for building enclosure assemblies, continuous insulation requirements, thermal bridges, air tightness and heat loss, and interaction between the building enclosure and mechanical systems. The session will conclude with a discussion of emerging technologies and trends.

Alex McGowan, P.Eng. - Vice-President, Technical Services, Levelton Consultants Ltd.
Alex McGowan is the Vice-President, Technical Services of Levelton Consultants Ltd., a 240-person consulting firm based in BC and Alberta. He is a licensed professional engineer in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario, and a member of the BC Building Envelope Council, the Ontario Building Envelope Council and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). He is the author of dozens of technical papers and journal articles related to building envelope performance, windows, and energy conservation in buildings. Mr. McGowan is a member of ASHRAE Technical Committees 1.12 (Moisture Control in Buildings), 4.4 (Building Materials and Building Envelope Performance) and 4.5 (Fenestration). He is also a member of ISO Technical Committee TC163 (Thermal Performance and Energy use in the Built Environment). He is the author of the Material Properties chapter in the ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals, and of the book “Energy-Efficient Residential and Commercial Windows Reference Guide”, published by the Canadian Electricity Association. He has been in the engineering consulting field for over 20 years.
Christian Cianfrone, P.Eng., LEED AP BD+C - Building Energy Specialist, Morrison Hershfield
Christian Cianfrone is a Building Energy Specialist with Morrison Hershfield’s (MH) Buildings, Technology and Energy division. Christian is MH’s technical lead on energy modelling and all engineering related issues associated with MH’s LEED consulting and LEED assessment services, typically involving interpretation of energy, ventilation and comfort codes and standards. Christian also sits on the Energy and Engineering Technical Advisory Group for the CaGBC and teaches courses related to energy and sustainability at UBC.
Dave Ricketts M.Sc., P.Eng. - Principal, Senior Building Science Specialist, RDH Building Engineering Ltd.
Dave Ricketts is a Principal at RDH Building Engineering Ltd. He provides building science consulting services for a wide range of new and existing buildings. In addition, he has authored numerous research papers and guideline documents related to building enclosure performance and energy. Most relevant to this seminar, he is co-author for two of HPO’s Builder Insight bulletins regarding energy use, and is the primary author of the recently released Building Enclosure Design Guide – Wood-Frame Multi-Unit Residential Buildings.
Graeme Scott, M.Eng., P.Eng., LEED® AP - Green Team Leader / Enclosure Technical Leader, Halsall Associates (Vancouver) Western
Graeme has an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo (1988) and a Master’s of Engineering Degree in Building Science and Structures from the University of Toronto (1997). He began his career as a design engineer providing structural design on a variety of low-rise industrial and assembly buildings and light-weight specialty structures. He originally worked for Halsall in Toronto from 1996–2002 as the Building Science Business Unit Manager. From 2002-2005 he was the Corporate Service Director of a multi-discipline Engineering firm with offices across Canada and the central US, where he developed and lead eight practice areas including Facility Assessments, Capital Planning, Cladding Engineering, Roof Consulting, Concrete Restoration, Code Compliance, Building Systems Engineering (commissioning), and Sustainable Building Solutions (waste management and LEED NC services). Upon moving to Vancouver with his family in 2005, Graeme was a Senior Building Science Specialist with a leading Building Engineering / Rehabilitation firm in the Lower Mainland. In 2008 Graeme decided to return to Halsall as a Project Principal and technical specialist and is currently working on projects across Canada. Graeme is a licensed Professional Engineer in BC, Alberta, Ontario and Nova Scotia and is a member of APEGBC’s Building Enclosure and Sustainability Committees. Graeme believes sustainable solutions are not an ‘option’, but a ‘given’ in building design and renewal. He draws on over 22 years of experience in both structural and building façade design to lead diverse teams of specialists in providing best in class whole building advice to clients. When designing or repairing a building, Graeme focuses on long-term, life cycle considerations: “The goal of any project is to determine the design that is most easily and cost effectively constructed and maintained, while upholding the Owner’s vision and sustainability objectives.
Mark Lawton, P.Eng, FEC - Vice President, Building and Facilities Division, Morrison Hershfield
Mark is a Vice President in the Building and Facilities Division of Morrison Hershfield, a multi-specialty engineering firm with offices across North America. He is a professional engineer with over 30 years of experience in building performance assessment, forensic investigation, testing and design. Currently resident in Vancouver, Mark’s career has included projects in all kinds of climate regimes from the arctic to the tropics. He is widely published on building science issues including: durability and performance of building enclosure assemblies, moisture control, energy performance, Indoor Air Quality, ventilation and managing the health impacts of mold in buildings. Mark was the Principle Researcher for an ASHRAE sponsored research project examining the significance of thermal bridges in common building assemblies for mid and high rise buildings.
