Are you a Structural Engineer who is considering pursuing the Designated Structural Engineer (Struct.Eng.) designation? This one day condensed course will provide an opportunity for you to learn the ins and outs of the IStructE Chartered Membership Exam, allowing you to determine whether this is the route you wish to pursue.
If you are already signed on to challenge the exam, this course will provide you with the insights into the exam contents, structure, examiner expectations, and strategies for success. The course will be presented by past exam candidates who have successfully completed the exam.
The course concentrates on the general principles and techniques required by candidates to successfully complete the IStructE Exam. David Harvey, P.Eng., Struct.Eng., British Columbia's IStructE representative, will provide an overview of the exam, and insights into meeting the examiners’ expectations. David’s presentation will be followed by a workshop session, designed to give you practice in working through exam questions. David will be joined by Mark Porter and Robert Jirava, who will lead the group in the collective solution development to past Part 1a exam questions. Participation and group discussion are encouraged during this day of hands-on training.

The Institution of Structural Engineers brings structural engineers from many countries together to contribute to the overall development of the science and art of structural engineering. The Institution has approximately 22,000 members of whom 50% are entitled to describe themselves as Chartered Structural Engineers. The vast majority achieve Chartered membership by passing the Institution Examination. The examination itself is a seven hour test in practical structural engineering design. The examination is internationally available and is taken approximately simultaneously at some 30 centres in the UK and 40 centres in countries outside the UK.
The examination is recognized internationally as a challenging but fair test of competence in structural engineering design. APEGBC has become the most recent organization to offer the exam on behalf of IStructE to interested structural practitioners in BC. Professionals who successfully pass the IStructE exam will have met the basic technical knowledge requirement for registration with the IStructE as a Chartered Engineer and/ or with APEGBC as a Designated Structural Engineer (Struct.Eng.).
David Harvey, P.Eng., Struct.Eng., FIStructE - Associated Engineering
David Harvey is a senior structural specialist with Associated Engineering in Burnaby. He has 40 years of experience, mostly with structures for transportation and heavy civil engineering projects.
