Association members who work outdoors frequently take photos for later interpretation or record keeping. Good quality photos convey a great deal of information but might not be used to their full potential because it’s difficult to visualize them accurately on the landscape. This is especially true of oblique aerial photos. However, features in the free version of Google Earth allow your photographs to be linked to ground locations and viewed by anyone. A particularly powerful feature is the ability to precisely overlay oblique aerial photos on the 3D landscape, allowing a level of geovisualization that was virtually impossible until recently. The data structures supported by Google Earth allow field notes, data, and photographs to be linked and organized in ways that facilitate storage, retrieval, interpretation, and sharing. This seminar will describe how to create interactive objects that display georeferenced oblique photos, text, and data. Good practices for constructing KMZ files and managing large sets of digital photos will be suggested. Familiarity with Google Earth or the seminar titled “Intermediate Google Earth Techniques” would be advantageous but is not required.

Intended audience – Anyone who uses photographs to document field work will benefit by being able to access their photos more easily and visualize them in a more geographically accurate context. Industry examples: Construction site and municipal facility supervision and monitoring; Utility transmission corridor monitoring; Mine site and reclamation planning and monitoring; Reservoir planning and visualization; Terrain stability and hydrogeomorphic event assessment; River and highway inspection; Compliance monitoring;
Mr. Patrick Teti P.Geo. was a Research Hydrologist with the Ministry of Forests and Range in Williams Lake for 18 years and is now an Emeritus Scientist with the Ministry of Natural Resource Operations. His research projects have been aimed at the effects of timber harvesting and regeneration on forest structure, snow hydrology, and stream shade. He invented an instrument for measuring shade under a forest canopy, developed procedures for taking his own vertical aerial photos, and has helped produce more than 20 reports and publications. Since retiring from the B.C. Government he has enjoyed doing more woodworking, running and volunteering in his community.
Mr. Teti has presented Google Earth training in several different locations in BC to audiences of up to 40 people.
