Seminar

Carbon sequestration in geological formations is an effective mitigation strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from industrial sources and is encouraged by The BC Energy Plan released in Spring 2007.  Recently, it has received more attention in the media and with government agencies as climate change initiatives have become important public concerns.  The workshop will provide an overview of various aspects of CCS with emphasis on application within British Columbia, assessment of suitable sedimentary basins for storage, site selection criteria, risk and regulatory concerns.

CCS occurs on a limited scale at sites in the northeast of the province where CO2 an H2S are extracted during the processing of raw natural gas and re-injected into depleted gas pools and deep saline formations.  Learn what CCS is, where and how it can be applied, what the associated risks are and how they can be mitigated.

The workshop will offer insight into the success and challenges related to implementing CCS in British Columbia and highlight its significance, particularly within the energy industry.  Discussion will include:

  • Overview of CCS technology
  • Opportunities within British Columbia, where and why
  • Technical and regulatory requirements for large-scale deployment
  • Risk mitigation measures
  • Status of government regulation and policy
