This seminar will summarize recent results examining the impacts of climate change on hydrology and water resources. The seminar will start with an overview of projections for climate change effects on different areas of Canada based on modeling results using Global Climate Models (GCMs) as summarized in the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. This will be followed by an overview of work examining trends in different hydrometric variables for different parts of Canada. The seminar will conclude with a synopsis of projected changes in hydrology and the impact that these may have on the operation and planning of water resources infrastructure. While results of climate change impacts will be presented for Canada (and other parts of North America), the main focus will be on projections for British Columbia.
This seminar should be of potential interest to water professionals involved in the design, operation and management of water systems. Water professionals involved in the hydropower industry, in water supply or involved with the design and operation of municipal infrastructure will all benefit from this seminar.
Donald H. Burn, P.Eng., University of Waterloo.
Dr. Burn has over 25 years of research, teaching and consulting experience in the area of water resources engineering and hydrology. Dr. Burn conducts research dealing with statistical aspects of hydrology. A focus of much of this work has been on the estimation of the risk associated with extreme hydrologic events. Dr. Burn has been involved in numerous studies examining the impacts of climatic change on hydrology and water resources. Dr. Burn has more than 120 papers published in refereed journals or conference proceedings. Dr. Burn is the Co-Editor of the Canadian Water Resources Journal and is a member of the Study Board for the International Joint Commission’s International Upper Great Lakes Study.
