Seminar Description

Coaching for Commitment is a two-day course designed to focus on the nontechnical people management skills needed by engineers and geoscientists in supervisory, project management and management positions.

It is designed to give engineering and geoscience managers the specific tools and skills needed to manage performance and ensure employees' ongoing commitment to superior results.

Correcting poor performance, and performance related-problems (e.g. work relationships) is a task most managers avoid, not knowing how to discuss these problems effectively with employees. Coaching for Commitment addresses this dilemma, and participants emerge with a step-by-step way to tackle these discussions.

It is a highly practical course focusing on four specific types of coaching: performance improvement (giving corrective feedback), problem solving, mentoring and tutoring.

Course Goals:

  • To show how coaching contributes to employee commitment and sustained superior performance.
  • To provide managers with a real-world, practical model of coaching and coaching skills that they can use the next business day.
  • To teach an easy-to-use process for coaching and to demonstrate the skills involved in each of the four types of coaching conversations.
  • To give participants a chance to apply the process and skills in industry specific practice situations.

What previous participants have said about this seminar:

  • "This was great! This was the first management course directed solely at engineers, and it made a huge difference. The course was logically presented and there was a good balance between lectures and workshops." Mark Rigolo, P.Eng., Ballard Power Systems
  • "My experience has shown me that this coaching course was extremely valuable. Anyone can deal with issues that are positive, but Coaching for Commitment taught me how to deal with the kinds of issues that are not positive and are often left to fester as they are unpleasant to deal with." Art McDonald, P.Eng., Kamloops School District
  • "Your experience with us technical types really comes through." Geoff Burn, P.Eng., Associated Engineering (Ont.) Ltd.
