Seminar

Coalbed Gas has generated a great deal of public debate in British Columbia and Alberta. It represents a significant natural gas resource for Canada and its production profile is forecast to grow dramatically. To fully develop this resource will take continued innovation and ongoing dialogue with stakeholders.

This seminar will examine key issues spanning several disciplines including geoscience, environmental science, hydrogeology, and reservoir, drilling and production engineering. Topics to be covered include:

  • North American natural gas supply and demand forecasts
  • Definitions of unconventional gas including coalbed gas
  • Origin and evolution of CBM development in North America
  • Potential role of unconventional gas in Canada's energy future
  • Coalbed gas potential, production and activity in Canada with an emphasis on British Columbia
  • Life cycle of coalbed gas projects
  • Environmental and land use conflict issues - water management practices and trends, surface impacts, noise mitigation techniques, air quality aspects, and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Stakeholder and First Nations Engagement
  • Technological developments, drilling and completion practices
  • Role of APEGBC members in the resource development debate

Who Should Attend

This session is designed for geoscientists, engineers and college students interested in learning more about British Columbia's unconventional natural gas resources, specifically coalbed gas.

Instructors

Derek Brown, P. Geo., M.Sc., President - Strategic West Energy Ltd.

Derek Brown oversaw the Provincial Coalbed Gas Strategy for seven years. During this time he toured producing fields across the United States and directed B.C.'s policy developments and collaborated with the Oil and Gas Commission on broad resource development issues. He spent the last three years as Executive Director for the Resource Development and Geoscience Branch, Oil and Gas Division, Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. His interests lie in energy policies and production, and the economic, social and environmental impacts of resource extraction. He has affiliations with the Canadian Centre for Energy Information and the Canadian Society of Unconventional Gas (CSUG). Derek currently owns a resource development consulting firm that focuses on the oil and gas sector.

Wendell Beavers, M.Sc, P. Geo (Washington State) - Energy and Natural Resources Consultant

Wendell Beavers has over thirty years of experience in the oil and gas and coal mining industries, including twenty-three years in all aspects of coalbed methane exploration and production. He has extensive experience in CBM project evaluation, project management and planning and in management of stakeholder and landowner consultation.
