Seminar

Join Albert and Vladimir for this engaging session as they explore the benefits of the net-zero design approach. Learn how the net-zero approach proactively addresses building performance, rather than relying on complex, reactive engineering systems.  Combining high-energy efficiency building envelopes with integrated renewable energy options, Net-Zero buildings produce the same amount of energy as they consume in a year.  Drawing on several project examples, Albert and Vladimir will address topics including human comfort, passive design, microclimate and energy modeling.

This engaging seminar will provide a new perspective on building energy use. The speakers will explain why shifting to reliance on lower energy quality — exergy — is just as important as reducing the energy quantity used in sustainable building design and possibly achieving Net-Zero.  Join us to learn the fundamentals of low-exergy building design and explore a realistic path toward adopting it in your projects.


Instructors

 Albert Bicol, P.Eng., LEED® AP, Cobalt Engineering

Albert champions the use of sustainable solutions in his projects. He has extensive expertise in modeling building energy usage, thermal comfort and indoor air quality conditions. As a LEED Accredited Professional, Albert performed reviews for the USGBC on projects applying for LEED certification and now heads Cobalt’s team for the review of project applications for the Canada Green Building Council. He was on the City of Vancouver Urban Design Panel – only the second Mechanical Engineer to serve in this capacity.

Albert has been invited to deliver over 150 presentations and has been a keynote speaker on sustainable building design and the true “Net Zero” approach in Canada, the US, and Asia. He has also volunteered to educate elementary school children on climate change. Albert was named as one of Building, Design and Construction’s 2007 ‘Top 40 Under 40’. This annual competition acknowledges industry leaders.

Vladimir Mikler, MSc, P.Eng., LEED® AP, Cobalt Engineering

Vladimir has a passion for designing energy-efficient and environmentally responsive buildings. With over 20 years of experience, Vladimir is well-versed in all aspects of sustainable building design. As a recognized industry leader, he has completed numerous successful projects. His broad experience extends from fundamental and applied university research, through practical design and project management in both consulting engineering and design-build environments, to “hands-on” construction management and field system installations.

Vladimir is also a recognized leader in Geo-Exchange technology. He has designed several systems internationally and co-authored the Geo-Exchange System Design Guidelines for applications in British Columbia. He is also one of the first engineers who pioneered applications of low-intensity radiant slab heating and cooling systems in North America. Vladimir is the Engineer-of-Record for Gleneagles Community Centre in West Vancouver, BC - the first “constant temperature building” in North America.

Vladimir has completed and is currently working on a number of challenging projects involving innovative application of energy conservation strategies and renewable energy sources. He has also completed the development of the City of Vancouver’s Passive Design Best Practices Guide.

Cancellation Policy

Registered attendees unable to attend the event may designate a substitute, provided APEGBC receives written notification at least one business day prior to the event. Registration information for the substitute attendee should accompany the notice. If notice of cancellation of registration is received:

•  5 business days or more prior to the event, a refund will be processed
•  Less than 5 business days prior to the event, no refunds apply

Substitute registrants are permitted up to the day of the seminar and member/non-member fees will be applied. The organizers reserve the right to cancel the event if less than the minimum required participants have registered. Liability limited to registration fee.
