This seminar is presented in partnership with the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals.

The Guidelines for Management of Terrain Stability in the Forest Sector was created through a collaboration of APEGBC and ABCFP.  These Guidelines are part of the professional reliance model envisioned under the Forest and Range Practices Act.  It advocates a team approach for developing a terrain management model.

This seminar will provide an overview of the Guidelines, specifically, the roles and responsibilities that members of both Associations have when carrying out work in the management of terrain stability.  Information will be given on when and where a TSA should be carried out and whether or not a TSA has been carried out.  Participants will learn forest development strategies that are consistent with the risks and how to interpret the Guidelines and gain an overall understanding of how these Guidelines will impact their practice.

This training will assist licensees in practicing due diligence which will include considerations around when to engage other professionals.  All Registered Professional Foresters, Registered Forest Technologists, Professional Engineers & Professional Geoscientists and others who are involved with managing terrain stability will benefit from this seminar.

Instructors

Mike Larock, RPF - ABCFP
Mike is the director of professional practice and forest stewardship for the ABCFP. He develops and communicates professional standards, provides guidance on professional practice matters and leads the association’s forest stewardship advocacy efforts.

Peter Mitchell, P.Eng. - APEGBC
Peter is the Director of Professional Standards and Development at APEGBC. His key responsibilities include the administration of the Practice Review Program, and providing staff support to numerous committees, task forces and boards dealing with professional practice issues including the Consulting Practice Committee, Building Codes Committee, Seismic Risk Task Force, Fee Guideline Task Force, Practice Review Committee, Certified Professional Committee, and the APEGBC/ABCPF Joint Practice Board. He also provides staff support to the Division of Engineers and Geoscientists in the Forest Sector (DEGIFS), and the Division of Structural Engineers (DSE).

Kevin Lyons, RPF
Kevin has over eleven years of professional experience in forest operations including cruising, engineering, road construction, and logging. He is also interested in operations research in forestry. Given the long periods between harvests and the numerous constraints on harvesting operations, he finds it important to find robust solutions to scheduling and harvesting problems.

Pierre Friele, P.Geo., Cordilleran Geoscience
Pierre is a professional geoscientist offering services in geologic hazards assessment, terrain mapping, geomorphology and historical geology.  His work experience is in land development including residential, forestry and other industrial projects. Projects include slope stability mapping, hazard frequency and magnitude assessments, flooding and erosion protection, headwater stream habitat assessments, and paleo-environmental reconstruction. Project scope typically involves field investigation, data compilation, and concise written communication of results and recommendations.

 Glynnis Horel, P.Eng., GM Horel Engineering Ltd.
Glynnis has over 30 years of experience as a geological engineer in terrain evaluation, slope stability assessments, watershed assessments, road deactivation, railway grade and road construction, and road maintenance and reconstruction.
