Seminar

This seminar is presented in partnership with Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals.

Initially approved in 2005, by the councils of ABCFP and APEGBC, the “Guidelines for Professional Services in the Forest Sector – Crossings” was created through a collaboration of both organizations.  It sets standards for members of the ABCFP and APEGBC involved in forest crossing planning and design.  The Guidelines were recently revised to address matters related to engineered culverts.

This seminar will provide an overview of the Guidelines, specifically the roles and responsibilities that members of both Association have when carrying out work on Forest Crossings.  Information will be given on how professionals are to interact with regards to the planning and design of crossings, as well as their limitations.  Participants will learn how to interpret the results-based guidelines and gain an overall understanding of how these Guidelines will impact their practice.

This training will assist licensees in practicing due diligence, by ensuring that they know the appropriate levels at which to involve different professionals.  All Registered Professional Foresters, Registered Forest Technologists, Professional Engineers & Professional Geoscientists and others who are involved with forest crossings will benefit from this seminar.

Please note that while the seminar content will be relevant to all members, this is not intended to be a “how to” course on bridge design.

Instructors

Mike Larock, RPF
Mike is the director of professional practice and forest stewardship for the ABCFP. He develops and communicates professional standards, provides guidance on professional practice matters and leads the association’s forest stewardship advocacy efforts.

Peter Mitchell, P.Eng. - APEGBC
Peter is the Director of Professional Standards and Development at APEGBC. His key responsibilities include the administration of the Practice Review Program, and providing staff support to numerous committees, task forces and boards dealing with professional practice issues including the Consulting Practice Committee, Building Codes Committee, Seismic Risk Task Force, Fee Guideline Task Force, Practice Review Committee, Certified Professional Committee, and the APEGBC/ABCPF Joint Practice Board. He also provides staff support to the Division of Engineers and Geoscientists in the Forest Sector (DEGIFS), and the Division of Structural Engineers (DSE).

Kevin Lyons, RPF
Kevin has over eleven years of professional experience in forest operations including cruising, engineering, road construction, and logging. He is also interested in operations research in forestry. Given the long periods between harvests and the numerous constraints on harvesting operations, he finds it important to find robust solutions to scheduling and harvesting problems.

Gary McClelland, P. Eng., Ministry of Forests and Range
Gary has been a Regional Bridge Engineer for the Ministry of Forests and Range  in Kamloops since  1982.  He has pioneered the use of many of the techniques that are now common place in forest crossings including: pre cast concrete footings, pre designed and pre fabricated bridge abutments and pre fabricated superstructures.  Gary was on the APEGBC review committee for the Guidelines for Professional Services in the Forest Sector

Calvin VanBuskirk, P. Eng. /P. Geo.
As a geotechnical engineer and founder of Terratech Consulting Ltd, Calvin developed ground-breaking systems for stream crossings and retaining walls using geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS). His pioneering work has kept him in high demand, but Calvin has remained a strong and active supporter of his professional community throughout his 20-year career, and has spent much of his personal time contributing to initiatives that have truly enhanced the resource industries.   Along with his work on several APEGBC committees, Calvin is a longstanding member and past Chair of DEGIFS, and has been a major contributor to many APEGBC forest sector guidelines.
