Seminar Description

The course is leading participants through the mechanical part of major overhaul of a hydro power plant starting with technical assessment carefully tackling each assembly of the unit and associated equipment, going through the major aspects in detail. Based on real life samples, Technical specification and Scope of Work of major overhaul will be presented in practice proven techniques of RFP definition, write up and issuance. The samples of interactions with potential proponents from the RFP evaluation all the way through the contract grant will be carefully analyzed covering following equipment and intents: Inlet valve, spiral case, stay vanes, wicket gates, links and levers, operating ring, servomotors, head cover, bottom ring, discharge ring, draft tube, turbine runner (repair process of the old and selection of the new one), turbine shaft, shaft seal, greaseless bushings. Listed topics and equipment will be covered with photographs showing characteristic mode of failures, damages and details.

Course Highlights

  • Projects definition creation
  • Technical Specification
  • Scope of Work with Cost Schedule
  • RFP's for Mechanical Rehabilitation
  • Pre bid meetings with Proponents
  • Revisions of documents
  • Correspondence, communication and clarification
  • Coordinated activity with Projects and Supply Chain
  • Intent clarification meetings
  • Data exchange with contractor
  • Contractual negotiations
  • Price schedule negotiation
  • Logistics prior to mobilization and along the project execution phase
  • Workshop with a real project of your choice (pending disclosure of drawings and details of refurbishment attempt

Course Materials Include

Material of the course with handouts is compacted by hands on approach and with real life samples from multiple projects that authors have worked on and experienced through professional careers in Site Engineering, Project Engineering, Design, Consulting and Advisory positions on domestic and overseas joint venture hydro projects.

Who Should Attend

Course should be attended by managers, project engineers and engineers responsible for major mechanical overhauls set with a goal to upgrade and up rate aging hydro turbine units enabling those to perform successfully for another 20 to 30 years of service.
