Seminar

Integrated geothermal heating systems consist of geothermal direct use and geothermal heat pump resources and technologies used for large-scale heating and cooling applications (heating and cooling of large buildings, malls, airports, campuses, city blocks, greenhouses, etc).

Contrary to small scale systems which can have a relatively standard design, large-scale geothermal systems are often very complex.  Efficient and sustainable use of a limited ground resource for a large application requires a detailed understanding and a customized design (to maximize the energy output while minimizing capital and operating costs).

This seminar will cover interlinked problems related to resource sustainability, technology options, monitoring/control systems and environmental/economical constraints.

The seminar will specifically cover topics on:

  • Sustainability and storability of geothermal resources (including ground, ground water and surface waters)
  • Integrated extraction, heat-pump, and heat distribution system design for sustainable and economically efficient use of the resource.

The course is solution oriented and discusses the anatomy of several challenging and successful Canadian real-case projects.

Instructor

Dr. Mory Ghomshei, P.Eng./P.Geo., University of British Columbia

As an international geothermal expert, Mory has designed and developed many medium and large-scale geothermal  heat pump systems for different applications ranging from heating/cooling of hospitals and large commercial/institutional facilities to district heating and greenhouse growing. He is one of the pioneers in extraction of clean geothermal energy from operating and abandoned mines (e.g. conducted a feasibility study on a 10 MW geothermal energy system from Con Mine to provide heat to the City of Yellowknife, NWT)

Mory is also an international expert in geothermal power resources and has participated in exploration and development of several geothermal fields around the world (e.g. Coso in California, Meager Creek in BC, Mt. Sabalan in Iran, and Mt. Labo in the Philippines).

As the former chair of the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (1989-2008), Mory has contributed to the promotion of geothermal energy in Canada through organizing conferences and workshops.
Mory teaches courses on energy resources of the ground at the University of British Columbia and has published more than 100 papers in scientific journals, proceedings and professional magazines.
