Seminar Description

Sustainability is at the forefront of our minds.  Governments and world leaders are strategizing to address urgent global issues around sustainability, in particular climate change. Issues facing our society encompass water shortages, fossil fuels use, material depletion, waste disposal, air quality, and land use.

The built environment has a significant impact on all these issues. As engineers, being part of the building industry we have a challenge, opportunity and responsibility to be part of the solution. However as engineers, in order to find optimum sustainable solutions, we need to work together with other disciplines. We need to have an understanding of each others disciplines and find ways to use systems and materials for multifunctional benefit.

This workshop will interest and benefit engineers in public or private sectors, in particular:

  • Mechanical Engineers
  • Structural Engineers
  • Building Envelope Engineers
  • Construction Project Engineers

This ½ day workshop will explore ideas, provide technical study data and help inform future direction for engineers of all disciplines to take an active role in the design of sustainable buildings. We will engage and inspire your business to integrate sustainable strategies into your designs. By the use of information, case studies and interactive group discussion you will be able to develop your road map to work collaboratively towards net zero energy, water, and optimization of materials in buildings.

Participants in this workshop will learn and explore the following topics:

  • Background basics on understanding each other’s disciplines
  • What are the discipline intersections of net zero principles?
  • Integrated strategies and systems from Europe to North America; coordination, benefits and constraints
  • Post occupancy report and data from net zero, carbon neutral building
  • Buildings and climate change: heavy or light mass? adaptability and future proofing
  • Green roofs and walls; energy, envelope, structure and environment.

Instructor:

Diana KleinDiana Klein, P.Eng., LEED®AP
Principal: Eco-Integration
Diana Klein is an engineer with over 20 years experience in the construction industry and specifically in the design of sustainable buildings. She came to Canada from the UK in 1988 and worked as a structural engineer with Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd, becoming their sustainable specialist and researcher for environmental design issues. Her first ‘green’ project was the CK Choi Building at UBC (1993-1996), a building embracing an holistic approach to building design.

In January 2006 she founded Eco-Integration, providing consulting on sustainable building design and education. One current project is Millennium Water; South East False Creek, Athletes Village in Vancouver. Diana is passionate about sustainability and education. She designs and delivers interactive workshops designed to both inform and challenge participants.

Diana is a member of the Outreach Education Committee in Vancouver, Cascadia Green Building Council and was part of the APEGBC (Association of Professional Engineers of BC) task force that advised on the BC Green Building Code that was launched in 2009 by the Provincial Government.
