Seminar Description

Google Earth can be a powerful tool for natural resource professionals and technicians. In addition to its high quality base imagery and 3d terrain, it can display roads, place names, and current weather. Layers such as topography, bedrock geology, community watershed boundaries, aerial photo flightlines, and forest inventory can be added by linking to third-party sources. Google Earth has tools for creating points, lines, polygons, measuring distance, and importing data from GPS receivers. It also allows scanned maps and aerial photos to be loaded and georeferenced. These added vector and bitmap objects can be annotated with text, images, and hyperlinks thus allowing richly-formatted interactive content to be created. These objects can be organized into folders and saved as KMZ files for personal record-keeping, sharing with colleagues, or electronic publishing. In short, Google Earth is a general purpose tool for viewing, creating, and sharing information related to locations on the earth. Because it is free, it is an ideal target platform for making your spatial data available to the public. See this link for examples (1.2 megabyte PDF file)  http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10838207/Google_Earth_interface_for_photos_and_data.pdf

Familiarity with Google Earth would be advantageous but is not required.

Agenda
•      Finding and using third-party content
•      Creating, importing, and editing points, lines, and polygons
•      Annotating objects with text, links, and snapshots
•      Making georeferenced maps and aerial photos
•      Managing and publishing your content

Intended audience – Anyone who uses maps, aerial photos, or other geospatial data will be able to more easily access information created by third-parties, document information that they create for internal records, and prepare their material for access by others. Industry examples: Field activities associated with Forestry, Geology, Hydrology, Recreation, Transportation, Public Safety, Land Use Planning and Monitoring.

Instructor:

Mr. Patrick Teti P.Geo. was a Research Hydrologist with the Ministry of Forests and Range in Williams Lake for 18 years and is now an Emeritus Scientist with the Ministry of Natural Resource Operations. His research projects have been aimed at the effects of timber harvesting and regeneration on forest structure, snow hydrology, and stream shade. He invented an instrument for measuring shade under a forest canopy, developed procedures for taking his own vertical aerial photos, and has helped produce more than 20 reports and publications. Since retiring from the B.C. Government he has enjoyed doing more woodworking, running and volunteering in his community.

Mr. Teti has presented Google Earth training in several different locations in BC to audiences of up to 40 people.
