Seminar Description

How can I learn to write clearly and concisely in a business context? What are the key elements for a well-written proposal? This seminar is designed to help you develop the confidence necessary to excel in your writing-writing that is direct and proficient. You'll learn to apply these writing techniques towards your proposals.

Topics presented will include:

  • Reviewing the communication process
  • Identifying your audience and purpose
  • Understanding tone and elements of persuasion
  • Reading and understanding RFPs
  • Elements of informal and formal proposals
  • Planning your writing
  • Avoiding common mistakes

This seminar is aimed at Engineers and Geoscientists who wish to improve their business writing skills. It provides a high-level overview on writing proposals.

Please note that this seminar will not address the legal, contractual, or financial aspects of preparing proposals.

This workshop will consist of instructor-led lecturing, exercises, and a group workshop. Attendees should bring pen and papers for the seminar.

 


Instructor

Eric Tung, MA - University of British Columbia

Eric Tung has a Master of Arts in English from the University of British Columbia and is an English Instructor at the UBC Writing Centre. He teaches academic, professional, and business writing courses. In addition, he is also a Business Strategy Advisor in Finance and Corporate Resources at BC Hydro and is part of the Business Transformation team.

Eric has corporate experience in change management, instructional design, training, and technical and business communications. Prior to UBC and BC Hydro, Eric was a Product Manager in Communications and a Technical Writer at Business Objects, a world-wide software company.
