Seminar

The use of solar hot water systems for domestic water heating and hydronic heating systems is spreading rapidly around the world.  Solar hot water systems contribute to reduced energy costs and a smaller carbon footprint for buildings.  SolarBC, a program of the BC Sustainable Energy Association, is working to make solar hot water systems part of mainstream building design.  This course will begin with an overview of SolarBC’s programs and the proliferation of solar hot water systems internationally.  The types of solar hot water systems and installation methods for residential, commercial, and institutional buildings will be explained.  BC Building Code requirements that relate to solar hot water installations will be presented.  Criteria for inclusion of solar hot water in building design, and integration of solar hot water with other renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency measures will also be discussed.  Questions will be welcomed throughout the course.

Instructors

Nitya C. Harris, M.E. Des., P.Eng.

Nitya Harris is presently Executive Director of the SolarBC program.  She initiated this program in 2005 with a pilot project to test the market for solar hot water in B.C.  As Project Lead, she also directed the B.C. 100,000 Solar Roofs Strategy and Action Plan.

Nitya worked as a gas reservoir and pipeline engineer in the energy sector in Alberta between 1980 and 1988 and as Environment Manager of B.C. Buildings Corporation from 1990 to 1997.  She also taught and conducted research in the Masters of Environmental Management program at Royal Roads University from 1997 to 2003.

Nitya is a Professional Engineer with a Masters in Environmental Design from the University of Calgary.

Mirko Slivar, P. Eng., C.P.

Mirko Slivar has over eighteen years experience in consulting mechanical engineering and project management.  He is a licensed professional engineer in British Columbia as well as a Certified Professional.

Mirko’s solar engineering experience includes solar feasibility studies for two aquatic centres and solar feasibility studies followed by full engineering drawings and specifications for two other recreation/aquatic centres, all in BC.  He prepared a solar feasibility study and performance specifications for tender for a golf clubhouse in North Vancouver.  He has also completed solar engineering drawings and specifications for three multi-family complexes in Kelowna.  He currently provides quality assurance inspections of solar hot water installations on single family residences throughout B.C on behalf of SolarBC.  Mirko has further assisted SolarBC by reviewing engineering drawings of manufactured solar hot water systems intended for single-family residences to determine whether their designs are equivalent to the CSA F379 standard.
