What is Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and how will it shape the future of our transportation system? This seminar will introduce ITS and provide an overview of the basic concepts and components of ITS. With examples of current and planned ITS implementations and research regionally and world-wide, as well as a discussion of issues that affect the adoption of ITS, it is hoped attendees will obtain a clear understanding of ITS and the opportunities it can provide to the engineering community.

Keenan Kitasaka, M.Eng., P.Eng., TransLink
Keenan Kitasaka has worked as the Manager, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for the past seven years at the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority (GVTA), also known as "TransLink". In his current role, Keenan is corporately responsible at TransLink for the ITS Department and supports capital projects that involve ITS. Keenan also provides ITS services to TransLink's subsidiary - the ITS Corporation, including its member agencies. Keenan has led many ITS projects during this time, including an integrated web portal called iMove and the Regional Condition Reporting System (RCRS) which allows agencies to input information into iMove.
Prior to his work at TransLink, Keenan was employed by the BC Ministry of Transportation and Highways as the Senior Traffic Management Engineer for approximately 8 years where he worked on many ITS related projects. Keenan serves on various committees in TransLink and in other organizations. Keenan was an ITS Canada Board Director for 4 years and remains actively involved in ITS Canada committees.
Keenan graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1982 with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree before returning to earn a Masters of Engineering degree in Transportation Engineering in 1985. Keenan has been a professional engineer for over 17 years.
Keenan continues to support the engineering and ITS communities by speaking at schools, UBC, colleges and various conferences.
Clark Lim, P.Eng., TransLink / UBC
Clark Lim has a Masters of Applied Science in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia, where he is currently a Ph.D. candidate researching on the development of an automated intersection safety assessment application. At UBC, Clark is also the Managing Director of the Bureau of Intelligent Transportation Systems and Freight Security within the Faculty of Applied Science, and a sessional lecturer teaching transportation engineering to undergraduate students.
At TransLink, Clark is the Program Manager for the Transportation Research & Technical Services Department, supporting transportation planning with analytical tools and data conducted from regional surveys. With over 15 years of experience in transportation engineering and planning, Clark has been involved in transportation plans, policy research, ITS and technology development, rapid transit planning, as well as the establishment of TransLink.
