Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is an emerging technology used to generate high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) via microsecond laser pulses emitted to the ground and reflected back to the detector. It is complimented by high precision colour (RGB) and near infrared (NIR) photography to create planimetric photomaps.
The course will describe the LiDAR and RGB/NIR camera systems, components, and principles; as well as, procedures (flight planning, post processing, QC, & deliverables), accuracy, and the applications to Engineering and Geosciences. LiDAR will then be compared with other technologies (InSAR, traditional photogrammetry, and satellite images)
In this course, we show that high resolution LiDAR data provides a level of detail not achievable by other digital terrain modelling techniques, whether extracted from aerial photography, low-resolution topographic contour maps, 10-30 meter USGS, or SRTM digital elevation models. The specific characteristics of Lidar data (e.g., signal penetration of forest canopy, or the achievable density values) are explained.
Following the technical part of the course, a selection of case studies and projects will be presented to illustrate how the technology has been used in corridor mapping, forestry, flood plain mapping and transportation design and 3D modelling applications. In particular, we show the use of LiDAR in detecting geological lineaments in remote areas.
The training session will conclude with a comparison of LiDAR costs versus those of other DEM methods.
Dr. Azadeh Koohzare is the project Manager with McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. with over 11 years of experience in Geodesy, Geomatics and surveying throughout Canada and internationally. Azadeh received her doctoral degree in Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering from the University of New Brunswick (UNB). Her focus was on deformation monitoring using geodetic data. She has worked as Associate Researcher and Instructor at UNB prior to joining McElhanney in 2007. Since 2003, she was worked together with more than 50 Canadian Scientists and Engineers in the development of seamless height datum for Canada. Azadeh has been involved in many national geodetic projects, and worked closely with NRCan in their major geodetic projects in Canada.
She is currently the project leader and advisor of the R&D activities in the LiDAR department at McElhanney, as well as managing the engineering survey projects involving GPS, conventional techniques and LiDAR.
John Blair BCLS, CLS
John Blair is the Vice President of Geomatics with McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd. He has more than 30 years experience throughout Canada and internationally, working on land information, cadastral land management, mapping, and marine survey applications. John has been involved in implementing new technologies and processes to improve delivery of products and services, and has presented workshops and papers at National and International conferences on airborne data acquisition and land management applications.
John is a BCLS, CLS and ALS (ret). He is originally a graduate and commissioned land surveyor from Australia.
