Volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits occur at, or near, the ocean floor when hot, metal-rich fluids discharge from vents along geological structures. These deposits can occur in a number of extensional environments such as a rifted-arcs, back-arc basins, and mid-ocean ridges, and require several key conditions to allow for the significant accumulation of metals.
The Wolverine deposit is a mid-Devonian, polymetallic, VMS deposit hosted within carbonaceous argillite, siliceous siltstones, and volumetrically minor, felsic volcaniclastics and porphyritic intrusions. The Wolverine deposit is a stratiform, well-zoned, polymetallic deposit and is assumed to be formed through sub-seafloor replacement within an infilling back-arc basin. Several key observations have led to a new understanding of the formation of the Wolverine deposit and led to the development of new exploration criteria.
Some topics to be covered are:
- VMS economics and significance
- VMS origin and genetic model
- VMS classification old and new
- VMS distribution in space and time
- VMS tectonic environments
- VMS alteration patters
- VMS exploration criteria
- A detailed look at the Wolverine Polymetallic VMS deposit
- Exercises with a sample suite from the Myra Falls VMS
Gilles Dessureau, MSc. P.Geo - Instructor, BCIT
Gilles Dessureau has been working in the mineral exploration industry since completing his graduate degree in 2002. He has accumulated vast experience in mineral exploration focusing on volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits along with other economically significant deposit types. He spent three years working on Yukon Zinc’s high grade, polymetallic Wolverine deposit and helped move the deposit from pre-feasibility towards production. During this time Gilles developed new theories about the formation of the Wolverine deposit which have led to a new understanding of the deposit.
